I very highly recomend this excellent book to anyone who is suffering from depression or, has close friends or family with this illness. This book is so well nariated that it is very easy to digest. It is so easy to listen to and very hard to turn off for a nap. What makes this book so entertaining & enlightening is that the author himself is also a sufferer and he has many years in medical experience working with so many patients having varying degrees of depression that the book is totally believable. You can actually feel the sincerity & compassion in the authors voice as he so tenderly reads. Very well done. I am in debt to this kind person. wagnernd
I cried at a few different spots in this book. "THAT'S ME! THAT"S ME! THAT'S ME!" and "YES OF COURSE!......"
This is a must read for anyone depressed or if a loved one is depressed. It gives you proven tools and things you can do TODAY to get better. It explains depression very well and I learned a lot of things that I didn't know before hand. I learned about characteristics of myself that were related to my depression that I had no idea were related.
The narrorator (who happens to be the author) is very easy to listen too.
I have suffered from severe depression for 10 years and this book gave me new HOPE and EMPOWERMENT!

The title of this book is a little misleading. This book is best for someone who is working or living with someone depressed. I'd also recommend this book to individuals who are interested in majoring in psychology/psychiatry.
Yes, this book would be an excellent supplemental book. I'd like O'Conner to provide a book that directly caters to depressives. He intertwines great techniques, but it is done in an indirect manner. For example, O'Conner provides an ample amount of information from medical research, but doesn't provide direct information on HOW to accomplish positive results in an organized or step by step manner. A workbook or a reference book would be great way to resolve this problem. I'd love to see O'Conner provide a book the specifically provides direct steps to assist depressives with meditation, exercise techniques, diet, defective thought processes, interacting with others etc.

The book seemed like an extended coaching-therapy session. I particularly enjoyed hearing it in the author's voice which seemed particularly authentic and encouraging. The words and advice here are helpful for anyone, with great life insights that can help make the most out of every moment of our lives.
I tried to listen to this book. I believed that if I listened to it I would be better able to come to grips with my depression and to overcome it. But I just couldn't listen to it. I don't know what it was, but something about the book actually made me feel worse.
The author has been thru a horrible depression and apparently came out on the other side, and may the Gods bless him for all he's been thru and for his efforts to help others in similar circumstances. But we are each unique, and this book was not for me.

I purchased both the audible and ebook after stumbling across excerpts from this book on a google search that almost exactly explained myself and how I have been feeling and acting throughout life. I felt so understood and was curious about how to improve my situation. But first I needed to understand....and this is the book that helped me with that first step.
I liked the fact that this book talks about options other than meds for depression.
This is a treasure trove for any and everything you'd like to know about depression. It's written in layman's terms. There is an abundance of research presented. Best of all, the author himself has experienced depression, so he knows what he's talking about. I am slogging my way through a major episode of depression at this time, so I understand what people mean when they say, "Listening to this book made me feel depressed/worse." While the information is bleak in nature, the author also expresses an attitude of hope, and stresses again and again that recovery is possible.
All of that being said, while I give the author his props, another narrator would have worked better for me.
Yes. For those who are or have been depressed, this is a very important book. One that merits careful study. Given the depth of this presentation, both reading and listening to this book is probably required to truly understand and take in this book.
On the question of the author's presentation I am biased toward author read books. It takes a while to get used to Dr. O'Connor's presentation - but clearly he believes in what and knows what he is saying. These facets shine through again and again.
