Publisher's summary

Richard Dawkins' brilliant reformulation of the theory of natural selection has the rare distinction of having provoked as much excitement and interest outside the scientific community as within it. His theories have helped change the whole nature of the study of social biology, and have forced thousands to rethink their beliefs about life.

In his internationally best-selling, now classic, volume, The Selfish Gene, Dawkins explains how the selfish gene can also be a subtle gene. The world of the selfish gene revolves around savage competition, ruthless exploitation, and deceit, and yet, Dawkins argues, acts of apparent altruism do exist in nature. Bees, for example, will commit suicide when they sting to protect the hive, and birds will risk their lives to warn the flock of an approaching hawk.

Critic reviews

"Dawkins first book, The Selfish Gene, was a smash hit.... Best of all, Dawkins laid out this biology - some of it truly subtle - in stunningly lucid prose. (It is, in my view, the best work of popular science ever written.)" (H. Allen Orr, Professor of Biology, University of Rochester, in The New York Review of Books)

Fascinating book

Survival machines, evolutionary stable strategies, memes, extended fenotype. Amazingly interesting topics. Narration by Richard Dawkins and Lala Ward is flawless.

No for everyone

This is one of those books who will be forever remembered and read, and definitely is a must read for every biology lover.
It’s long and I suggest getting at least a little familiar with genetics and Gregor Mendel’s life and work, but it’s worth your time.

Mind blown

Really makes you look at life in a totally different light. If you're thinking about getting this book, I highly recommend it, and the performance was really great as well.

Fascinating!

The truth is awe inspiring. The book was very accessible while at the same time covered some very involved lines of reasoning.

Interesting perspectives from a gene''s viewpoint

Perspective was insightful into the selfish aims of the immortal replicating genes. I especially liked the chapter about the prisoner's dilemma. Loved listening to the author's narration as he alternated the reading with the female narrator La La Wars.

Great ideas

Such a powerful mind, such a compendium of how life is, was and it will be. The last sentence was no doubt a forever meme of this book

Wow ...just wow

Some books get way too much credit and others not enough. If it were up to me this book would replace every religious text written

Fascinating and educational

Not as engaging as some of his other books, but still very fascinating. It confirmed some things I’ve thought about natural selection for a long time, as well as teaching me many new things.
