The acclaimed Science of Discworld centred on an original Pratchett story about the Wizards of Discworld. In it they accidentally witnessed the creation and evolution of our universe, a plot which was interleaved with a Cohen & Stewart non-fiction narrative about Big Science. In The Science of Discworld II our authors join forces again to see just what happens when the wizards meddle with history in a battle against the elves for the future of humanity on Earth. London is replaced by a dozy Neanderthal village.
The Renaissance is given a push. The role of fat women in art is developed. And one very famous playwright gets born and writes The Play. Weaving together a fast-paced Discworld novelette with cutting-edge scientific commentary on the evolution and development of the human mind, culture, language, art, and science, this is a book in which 'the hard science is as gripping as the fiction'. I'd listen to this and previous book because it is too many facts to grasp at once
Please, do not compare it to other Discworld books. This is not a novel at all. This is more a textbook, about scientific point of view on things, rather than novel. It is not about wizards, it is about Earth nature, people, evolution etc
Science of Discworld is amazing books about science of our world. Not just facts. It is great introduction into modern science world-view. Highly recommended for high school kids, may be university students. Great job, Terry and company.
Alternate chapters all the way thru....one mediocre story and bad narration the next waffle of strange science..reads like drunken rave. I gave up after 3 chapters..it is terrible. I loved all other Prachett books. I suggest Witches Abroad if you are new to Terry Pratchett....the best fun in audio listening
Only Terry Pratchett. The others were Rubbish!
Yes, the narration was off...all others I've listened to were brilliant!
The alternate chapters were garbage.
This book is terrible...I'm a huge Pratchett fan it's hard to believe he had any input at all...very hard to believe Sir Pratchett wrote a single word.
From the way she acts when I take them off, I've a feeling my baby girl thinks I have headphones graphed to my skull.
I found It very hard to rate this book because to me it's like two books meshed together in some horrible "The Fly" like teleporter accident! One was an entertaining and as usual funny Terry Pratchett novel. The other was a book which, if I read it on it's own, I may have enjoyed as a quirky take on the history of earth sciences. When I bought it I thought the science would be a compliment to the novel but there's so much of it, it's burying my Pratchett! and that is a sin that can not be forgiven. I'd give the discworld part 9 stars but the annoyance of having to dig it out has reduced that to 7. They should try publishing the novel part as a stand alone work.
Brief flashes of the Wizards of UU interspersed with a LOT of pseudoscience loosely based on past Discworld books.. If you are looking for a ton of details on L space, look no further. If you are looking for a Discworld book, look elsewhere.
"Big Science and Fantasy hold hands"
A warm and friendly book that has fun along the way and doesn't take its self too seriously. The Big Science bit ambles along with a nudge and a wink, the Fantasy side adds a respectful nod and gets on with what makes it sell millions. But bear in mind that this is not a DiscWorld book.
TSoD Pt 1 was a bit of a good natured panel debate between two opposing camps. Pt 2 is an out and out collusion but absolutely none the worse and all for the better for that.
"sequel better then first book"
Excellent got even better! I have listened to book I for curiosity and I fell in love with it. This second book is even better. It is more up to date and address issues that are going on in the current world.
If you love Discworld and you have "a little" scientist in you you will love all characters. Not sure about Fairy folk. I prefer them in "Tolkien like" form but this is completely different book.
Amazing performance from Michael Fenton Stevens and Stephen Briggs. I got completely immersed into the story and I felt like there are at least five more narrators in the book. I look forward to listening to book III.
This should be on reading list in school. I am sure kids would learn more if all science is presented like this.
love this book! education without the boredom of reading through textbooks
not the best
learning can amuse you!
"The Red pill."
Great book to open your mind with. Plus its still a discworld book which are brilliant can not wait to read the rest of the series.
