Publisher's summary

Here, the man who started the "food revolution" with the million-plus-selling Diet for a New America, boldly posits that, collectively, our personal diet can save ourselves and the world. If, according to chaos theory, the beating of a butterfly's wing can cause a hurricane in another part of the world, try this out for chaotic cause and effect: monarch butterflies are dying in droves due to genetically-engineered corn growing in the Midwest. There is also a direct correlation between the Big Mac in your hand and the mile-wide river now running across the North Pole. Learn the truth about foods we are eating that are, in Robbins' words, "unsafe on any plate."

The Revolution That Is A Wake Up Call

Where does The Food Revolution rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It ranks at the top 3.

What other book might you compare The Food Revolution to and why?

It works effectively as a precursor or a follow up to the The China Study by T. Collin Campbell.

What does John Robbins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Robbins brings more inflection and passion to his written words.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

This book can and has changed lives for the better. There is so much going on in the food industry that the average person is not aware of. Robbins doesn't throw out glittering generalites. In the printed book, he presents his information and backs it with scientific findings from an exhaustive number of footnotes. This is important to note since you don't realize this just from the audio book alone. The information is solid and thankfully he is helping to heal the planet, one reader at a time.

A real eye opener

First I read How Not To Die, then The China Study. Now The Food Revolution. They have all been so informative. This one is especially an eye opener. I never thought I would become a vegetarian; certainly not a vegan. but when my 23 yr old son decided to give up animal products to lower his cholesterol, I became concerned about the usual misconceptions. Was he getting enough protein and calcium? He was already thin and at first he dropped weight quickly. I was sure he was losing muscle mass. So I ordered these books to learn how to support him and help him get adequate nutrition. Now I'm eating a whole food, plant based diet with him. His weight has leveled off and his cholesterol numbers are improving. I no longer believe the false advertising and lies of the dairy, meat, fast food and even the agricultural industries I am so grateful to have found doctors who are doing all they can to spread the truth. Thanks to this book I now understand that it is not only healthy for humans to consume a Whole Food, Plant Based Diet, but it is also healthier for our planet. I don't know how much of an impact I alone can have on helping our planet, but I believe I am about to change my own future and I feel responsible for doing whatever I can to improve the future of this planet which does all it can to sustain us. it's the least I can do.

Good but filled with repetitive lofty rhetoric

I enjoyed the book and feel it was well researched and organized, but the constant repituous sermon prose was very irritating.

Excellent

Another great book on the myriad benefits of a whole foods plant based diet. I really wish this message would get out there more. The world would be a far better place. People would be dramatically healthier. The environment would substantially improve. And many millions of sentient intelligent animals would not spend their entire short lives in tortured misery.

Outstanding book. Highly recommended.

Robins points out the truth of Food Industry

I have much respect for Robins who could of sold out to riches that his dad made making ice cream instead he chose to find the truth behind the lies of the dairy, meat, poultry and chemical companies that poison our crops with GMO. Truly a must read among so much misinformation on diets which he backs up with references.

Scary book!

This book is full of warnings I've heard throughout my life, but it's got them all packaged in 1 rhetorically charged combination. It definitely solidified some of my thoughts gm foods, and made me really re-think some of my other dietary choices.

Comprehensive and insightful; never boring

Where does The Food Revolution rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was my favorite nonfiction. I was greatly impressed with what may have been unparalleled insight. Amazingly, this book was written 16 years ago, but is still very relevant! .Unfortunately, it is also a call to action, as you can appreciate just how little progress we have made, especially in the US. With more awareness, action will certainly follow!

What did you like best about this story?

John Robbins has an ability to say so much, clearly and quickly - this is great writing. The references were excellent, and you know when you are getting a personal opinion and when you are getting fact. I have read or listened to many books (blogs, podcasts, as well) on how the environment, animal welfare, and human health are deeply interconnected. Many books on these subjects can be dry with too much data and reference material. This was abridged nicely with a nice flow making continual and lasting mental impressions. There were around 70 chapters each covering a topic for 5 minutes or so.

Which character – as performed by John Robbins – was your favorite?

It was a real treat having John read his book. His sincerity shined though, while the other narrators, used for role-play, effectively kept me engaged.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Because so much troubling information is presented, I sometimes needed a a break.
