"Should be called a developers roadmap to success!"
Where does Soft Skills: The Software Developer's Life Manual rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is my favorite audio book. I refer back to it often and glean new information each time.

What other book might you compare Soft Skills: The Software Developer's Life Manual to and why?

There are certain elements that remind me of How to win friends and influence people. It would however be unfair to both books to make the direct comparison because John Sonmez doesn't give the amount of anecdotal information on human interactions that Dale Carnegie does and "How to win friends and influence people" certainly doesn't cover as many topics that Soft Skills does.

Which character – as performed by John Sonmez – was your favorite?

    N/A

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The chapters on Nutrition and Physical Fitness. As programmers we work very sedentary jobs at times and this is an area where we could all use a helping hand.

    Any additional comments?

I recommend this book to all my friends, new programmers as well as non-programmers. If you are considering it I promise you won't be disappointed.

"Do yourself a huge favor; listen to this!"
Where does Soft Skills: The Software Developer's Life Manual rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was the very first audiobook I've ever listened to, and by far the best. If you suffer from low self-esteem, imposter syndrome, or pessimistic attitude, John Sonmez will inspire and motivate you to be your best.

What did you like best about this story?

At first I thought this book was only about communicating with people. Then I realized that it's about almost every facet of professional life.

What does John Sonmez bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

John Sonmez both talks the talk and walks the walk, and he's still incredibly modest and down-to-earth. He never claims his words to be the gospel; he expresses a genuine interest in helping you to become your best self.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Toward the beginning, John Sonmez repeatedly emphasizes the fact that you are always more than just a worker for a company. You should think of yourself as a company who is providing a product, your labor. Therefore you should constantly and heavily invest in making you (and thus your product) better. Take pride in it.

    Any additional comments?

This book is geared toward software developers, but I think 80% of it easily applies to everyone else in the world. Read this book, and take its advice to heart.

"A new life manual for any software developer"

Just being new to the development world, I wad a bit hesitant when I was recommended to buy a software development book thats not really about software development.
But after getting into the book I completely understood John and his reasons for writing this book, there is a need for it and not enough people are preaching self development in these sort of areas (I come from a mechanical engineering background). He hits the nail on the head on so many topics and his style of writing many small chapters worked a treat as I could small chunk the information in my spare time. He teaches you ways to market yourself, to stay fit, how to handle your finances, how to see yourself as a different person and grow into that person. His background in Software development gave him a great foundation as he could easily convey how he gets his work done and how we can too.
Im excited for a few months time when I relisten to this book and see what else I get from it.
Hes inspired me to write my own blog and Im currently doing his email course on blogging. So hopefully we can connect sometime in the future.

    "Great work John."

I picked up this book for completely different reasons but I leave with the necessary knowledge I would have overlooked otherwise. Take a break and read this book. There are some lessons that one would not probably embark upon in a lifetime. I certainly hope I can remember all this. Thank you.

    "Many words, little substance"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

This book is very information sparse. Each chapter has an introduction, summary, the actual content (which is generally very information sparse), followed by another summary.

You don't really get that much information. Pretty much the entire book could be condensed into a 2 hour informative presentation.

"Worth getting for the additional insights"
What did you like most about Soft Skills: The Software Developer's Life Manual?

I really like the way John presents his content. The best part compared to reading the book is that John includes additional insights and tips that are not in the original text. He doesn't go off on a tangent though and the additional content is well worth listening to.

What does John Sonmez bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The extra insights where he goes more in-depth about certain subjects or where he will add extra value by talking about new things he's learnt since the printed version was published.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me feel motivated - Not all the techniques and ideas within the book were new to me, but it definitely motivates you to really think about your situation more. It's a book you can listen to multiple times and be motivated by it again and again

    Any additional comments?

"Good solid advice, worth multiple listens"

Great book. Good solid advice for anyone in software engineering not just developers. covers a lot of ground with just enough detail to keep you listening and wanting to find out more about the areas under discussion.

Some of the audio recording could be better but didn't take much away from the content.

Well worth a read or listen for anyone in software and the extra content on John's website is good my main criticism is that the style is a bit too get rich quick sales style however the content is worth it.
