Publisher's summary

First published in 1962, Silent Spring can single-handedly be credited with sounding the alarm and raising awareness of humankind's collective impact on its own future through chemical pollution. No other book has so strongly influenced the environmental conscience of Americans and the world at large.

Critic reviews

"Silent Spring came as a cry in the wilderness, a deeply felt, thoroughly researched, and brilliantly written argument that changed the course of history." (Al Gore)

Featured Article: The top 100 classics of all time

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

Incredibly well writte - almost poetry

Just as relebant 50 years later, A must listen, for anyone concerned with the future of Life on earth. How beautifully the language flows is magnified while listening - even with such scary topics.

I am speechless. This book is an AMAZING TESTIMONY

Based solely on factually unbiased, statistical evidence, Rachel Carson wrote an almost poetical biography of our Mother Earth/Gaia's Sorrow her pain. Now in our "collective conscious awareness" Birthing Ecology. I dare you Not to Care!

Very important to make people understand the impact of herbicides and pesticides on our environment.

Still worth the read!

Rachel Carson was one of the first to sound the alarm about the impact of harmful chemicals, particularly herbicides and pesticides.

If you are a baby boomer, you MUST read this!!

while the info is dated, and many of these chemicals are now banned--because of this book!!--those of us who grew up in the 40's-60's MUST read this. i am 56 and both my mother (who is 90) and I are now suffering from debilitating diseases which were definitely caused by my father's insane over-use of chloridane in that time period. he died many years ago of a stroke and other diseases which are directly related to these now-banned pesticides. these chemicals remain in our system and have probably also affected our children and their children! what a legacy our government left us in its selfish, self-serving, special-interest-guided efforts. does anyone know of a parallel book written since this one?

Seems to a timeless lesson.

I'm this leadership era of Neanderthal thinking this would be a s pertinent book to assign to to those tasked with leading certain agencies. Given it age it's obvious an astounding of research not to mention passion went into this book.

A must read

One of the most powerful books I’ve read, and one of the most eloquent performances I’ve heard. Kaiulani Lee truly does justice to Rachel Carson, who may be the most poetic scientist of all time.

Powerfully Enlightening - Presently Relevant

The author raised my awareness of the importance with which should view all life surrounding us. Her writing engenders a healthy respect for all life, including our own and how we are the primary catalyst and active participant in either our own destruction and the life surrounding us or the respectful stewards of the same. The narrator read as though she were the writer. This book should be in every government, school, business, and home library. I plan to listen to this again.

Great Work

I love that this book sparked such a change in how people behave. It gives me a lot of hope for our species that we are capable of seeing whats happening and changing. Carson writes in a beautiful way
