Publisher's Summary

Today's psychologist is apt to be very different from the image most people conjure up when asked to picture one - an image that almost always suggests Sigmund Freud or someone like him, complete with leather couch.

But as indebted as they may be to Freud's landmark explorations of our psychological landscape, modern psychologists are involved in far more than helping people cope with their inner demons. Instead, they are working in areas that now encompass every part of the process by which we develop and function as people:

  • How we perceive, remember, and learn
  • How we select our friends and partners and retain their affection and love
  • The things that motivate us

Now you can gain a basic introduction to psychology - beginning with its historical context and looking ahead to some of the directions it is likely to take in the future - in this fascinating series of 36 lectures from an acclaimed teacher and author. It explores all of the many new areas that now fit comfortably beneath psychology's umbrella and the sophisticated new research methods that have emerged.

These lectures are both an excellent summary of a transformed profession and an ideal starting point for those eager to expand their understanding of the human mind.

    Story
    "This course is not "Great"."
What disappointed you about Psychology of Human Behavior?

    Extremely basic in every way.

Has Psychology of Human Behavior turned you off from other books in this genre?

The question is: what makes this course "Great"? It's a series of mediocre lectures.

What didn’t you like about Professor David W. Martin’s performance?

His lecture style and content might be appropriate for an evening continuing ed class at a community college. I forced myself to stick with the first few chapters. It's Dr. Wade's job to present the information in a confident and professional manner. When he openly struggles to overcome his embarrassment while explaining the sexual aspects of Freudian theory I realized that the caliber of this course was not what I expected or paid for.

    "Basic, but fairly interesting."
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I have done, but only those with very little knowledge on the subject.

Would you be willing to try another book from The Great Courses? Why or why not?

Yes, I have downloaded a few.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    NA

Do you think Psychology of Human Behavior needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I think the guy needs to do some more reading himself, especially regarding the pharmacology aspects of the talk, as he does not have a clue. Many of the words he can not even pronounce correctly.

It is like he read some bad websites 10 minutes before his talk, made notes, and was reading from them.

I would certainly not like him to be my professor.

    Any additional comments?

Much of the sections on psychoactive drugs was incorrect, and some of the other parts of the lectures were too, and I picked that up from my basic knowledge.

This came as a bit of a surprise to me.

Some of the studies cited do confirm that psychology researchers have way too much time on their hands.

    Story
"Wonderful lectures. Very clear and to the point."
What made the experience of listening to Psychology of Human Behavior the most enjoyable?

Very interesting insights into the complex human mind. Explained in such a clear and direct manner that every minute feels valuable.

What did you like best about this story?

This is not a story, but I liked how the lectures were structured in a way that you got to experience a whole year of lectures without needing to leave the comfort of your own home.

What does Professor David W. Martin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

His personality and ability to make the lectures even more interesting with just his general tone and personality.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No not really!

    Any additional comments?

Brilliant. Will look out for more from this series.

"The perfect introduction for any psychology major!"
What made the experience of listening to Psychology of Human Behavior the most enjoyable?

The lectures were short and focused on detail.

What did you like best about this story?

The fact that every chapter focused on a key aspect of the subject content

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I enjoyed all of the lectures but the Psychology of Emotion was my favourite

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The moment at the end of each chapter in which I learnt something extremely valuable to my course.

    Any additional comments?

The Psychology of Human Behaviour is the perfect book for any undergraduate psychology major. The series of lectures break down the subject into its key area and explain in great detail to the student, the theories of psychology today. The quality of the teaching is of an extraordinary standard and allows the student to engage in each of the lectures. Every second of the audio book is relevant to the understanding of the subject. Each lecture is short and to the point. The student can focus for half an hour and then come back to learn more another time whenever it suits. Overall, a truly wonderful listen and an incentive to study and learn more of courses on offer by The Great Courses series.

    "Excellent"

It took weeks to get through this. He is a brilliant lecturer. Inevitably there are aspects you won't be so interested in, for example, the workings of the eye. But overall, highly recommended.
