Story
Andrea Petersen was first diagnosed with an anxiety disorder at the age of 20, but she later realized that she had been experiencing panic attacks since childhood. With time her symptoms multiplied. She agonized over every odd physical sensation. She developed fears of driving on highways, going to movie theaters, even licking envelopes. Although having a name for her condition was an enormous relief, it was only the beginning of a journey to understand and master it.

Pathologies of Power uses harrowing stories of life - and death - in extreme situations to interrogate our understanding of human rights. Paul Farmer argues that promoting the social and economic rights of the world's poor is the most important human rights struggle of our times. With passionate eyewitness accounts from the prisons of Russia and the beleaguered villages of Haiti and Chiapas, this book links the lived experiences of individual victims to a broader analysis of structural violence.

Story
Paul Farmer has battled AIDS in rural Haiti and deadly strains of drug-resistant tuberculosis in the slums of Peru. A physician-anthropologist with more than fifteen years in the field, Farmer writes from the front lines of the war against these modern plagues and shows why, even more than those of history, they target the poor.

Story
With remarkable clarity and with great detachment, Kidder looks back at himself from across three and a half decades, confessing how, as a young lieutenant, he sought to borrow from the tragedy around him and to imagine himself a romantic hero. Unrelentingly honest, rueful, and revealing, My Detachment gives us war without heroism, while preserving those rare moments of redeeming grace in the midst of lunacy and danger.

Story
Sometimes in medicine the only way to know what is truly going on in a patient is to operate, to look inside with one's own eyes. This audio is exploratory surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science not in its idealized form, but as it actually is - complicated, perplexing, and profoundly human. Atul Gawande offers an unflinching view from the scalpel's edge, where science is ambiguous, information is limited, the stakes are high. In dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors, he explores how deadly mistakes occur and why good surgeons go bad.

But nowhere is this drive to do better more important than in medicine, where lives are on the line with every decision. In this book, Atul Gawande explores how doctors strive to close the gap between best intentions and best performance in the face of obstacles that sometimes seem insurmountable.

At its heart are Powell's "Thirteen Rules" - such as "Get mad, then get over it" and "Share credit" - that introduce his principles for effective leadership: conviction, hard work, and, above all, respect for others. it may change your life-view about charity, love
This is about a real-life superhero, who has lived the most kind, loving, extradinary life. Even if none of us can measure up to this man, we learn from this book, the motivation, the philosophy, the actions of a living, working very great man. And possibly, change our world view.

good book, very well read, a bit on the liberal side... Probably a fair treatment of Dr Farmer and his work on serving the poor in Haiti and Puru, among others.

a great read with wonderful narration. loved it.
writing like this and stories like this are greater than fiction. And they are all true and very inspiring to some, and seem crazy and audacious to others. Listen and make up your own mind.
People like Paul and many other PIH staff in this story come along only once in a century.

In complete awe
Dr. Paul Farmer was more than a doctor. What set him apart from others? Even other doctors? He truly wanted to be there for his patients, no matter the environment he was in. He aimed to serve the underrepresented and mistreated, and support them through their tough journeys. He made this his life's mission. His commitment to Haiti was phenomenal. His commitment to public service was phenomenal. I have so much respect for his life; he is very inspiring. His legacy will live on :)

Paul Farmer, Mother Theresa
If Paul Farmer was not a saint, then I don’t know who is. An inspiring example of humanity and a human being dedicated to serve, in a completely egalitarian manner. Tracy Kidder is/was the perfect writer for this story. Like attracts like, I suppose. An inspirational, aspirational work fully deserving of the Pulitzer.
