Publisher's summary

Dr. George K. Simon knows how people push your buttons: your children---especially teens---are experts at it, as is your mate. A coworker may quietly undermine your efforts while professing to be helpful, or your boss may prey on your weaknesses. Manipulative people have two goals: to win and to look good doing it. Too often, those they abuse are only vaguely aware of what is happening to them. In this eye-opening book, you'll discover:

  • four reasons why victims have a hard time leaving abusive relationships
  • power tactics manipulative people use to push their own agendas and justify their behavior
  • ways to redefine the rules of engagement between you and the abuser
  • how to spot potential weaknesses in your character that can set you up for manipulation
  • two tools for personal empowerment to help you maintain greater strength in all relationships

hate the voices he does

The information is good but WHY does the author do those ridiculous mimicking condescending voices??? The ones for women are the worst and totally insulting. I'm a professional and a direct straightforward reading would be appreciated. I dont do those when I read and do not like them at all. Totally ruined the book.

Love how he tied it all together

This book was referenced by another book, and it did not disappoint. I loved how the author used his examples and and kept referring to the same examples in the different chapters.

Great book

The information was clear, and very practical! I have learned a lot about these personalities over the years and when I can, I choose to avoid difficult people but sometimes I have to deal with them

Vital.

This book has changed my life for the better, and I self-quiz and review it every few years. Simon’s categories are simply more functional than others I’ve encountered, because they don’t turn a blind eye to “aggressive” behaviors, nor do they lump all aggression under “narcissism”.

Simon insist that most of the change must come from the person who is being taken advantage of, and that a mindset which couches “aggressive” actions as anything else will set one up for becoming, or continuing to be, a victim.

The reader will benefit further from this book if, while/after following Simon’s advice, she is able to pay more attention to her interactions in the present moment, and cares less about the labeling of someone as “neurotic” or “character disturbed”. (Label the action rather than the actor.)

I highly recommend this book. 5 Stars all the way!

Excellent

Covert Aggressive Personality Disorder: Sometimes you get the key to a code which gives an AHA! moment. We have ALL dealth with difficult people and wondered how to handle them, but like a ghost in the night they can be very elusive and very tricky.

Firstly one has to get over self doubts and realize that these creatures exist. After that one has to identify who they are and how they play their games. And their games can be very nasty and toxic indeed and build up to a fatal destructive level. This really is a pernicious relationship destroying problem, which needs to be recognised and controlled post haste whenever it arises, if harmony is going to be restored.

The point is to realize it and recognise it. I gratefully thank the author and also recommend "Working With Monsters' by Dr John Clarke as an enlightening source of further reading.

Very helpful

This book was very helpful and informative. I gained strength and was able to cope better with why I am in a situation with someone who seems to care alot but always keeps me down in the pecking order.

A weapon for survivors

This book validates the person who’s been abused by a manipulative person with narcissistic behaviors. The way the author breaks down the psyche and subsequent behaviors is mind blowing. The best part is that he offers strategies to combat this personality that quite effectively disarms the aggressor. Awesome book.
