Editorial reviews

iMinds is a company that produces brief audio introductions to subjects of historical and/or scientific interest. Usually spoken over soft, pulsating music reminiscent of science fiction films, their introductions are like mini-encyclopedia entries meant to awaken a listener’s interest in a given field. Ellouise Rothwell narrates this audiobook in a pleasing, suspense-inducing Australian accent.

In this instalment, listeners are taken into the history and science of in vitro fertilization, perhaps the single most important technological development in human procreation. While the first report of successful in vitro fertilization happened in the 19th century, widespread use of the practice was not common until the 1920s. Its bumpy history includes denunciations from the pope, but many thousands of couples would not have been able to conceive without it.

It all began in 1866, when there were reports of a successful human birth from Artificial Insemination, or AI, in the United States. "I'm learning all sorts of stuff about stuff I didn't even know I didn't know. And it sticks. In a nutshell: wonderful." (Jonathon Margolis, Financial Times)

Not for the faint heart!

Until the first third of the audio book or so, the IVF procedure seemed cool and miraculous. However, the later part of the audio book gave me the visualization of a sort of a scary movie. IVF seems like a challenging and complicated/elaborate procedure and certainly not meant for a faint heart with so many probable complications. People who went through it now seem to me as quite brave indeed.

A brief overview using British English accent

Not bad but not great. A more comprehensive review would have been more welcome. One that would last at least 2 times longer
