Did you know that...
Rising sea level is the most profound long-term aspect of climate change. Yet, the public is almost completely unaware of the magnitude of the problem. For three million years sea level regularly moved up and down almost 400 feet with the ice age cycles. Now, after 6,000 years of minimal change, we are entering a new era of rapid sea level rise. This book although startling at times and disturbing in other ways is a necessary call to citizens of this planet to address the issues of climate change. It is high time to stop the unproductive denial and silly debates over cause and effect and move to take action on real long term solutions to our situation. To quote Stan Laurel,"It's a fine mess you got us in now Ollie." Let's get to concerted effort to address this set of issues. Our kids and grandkids are needing us to lead now.
John Englander not only wrote a book that everyone concerned about climate change should read, he also did a great job reading it. My only complaint is that he is too optimistic. He has one chapter saying that the models might be wrong due to methane clathrates coming to the surface, but then assumes they are right for the rest of the book. Rising sea levels will cause a terrible refugee crisis that he doesn't stress enough. But rising sea levels need to be addressed by an expert, he is the one to do it, and he did it in this book.
Concise and thought-provoking. Sadly, despite all of the information out there, most people probably are sticking their heads in the sand. Thank you, John, for trying to elucidate the most important issue of our day! I hope that you and other authors like you will be able to shake us out of our slumber and help us to save our planet and our own existence.
