The emotional trauma we suffer as children not only shapes our emotional lives as adults but also affects our physical health and overall well-being. Scientists now know on a biochemical level exactly how parents' chronic fights, divorce, death in the family, being bullied or hazed, and growing up with a hypercritical, alcoholic, or mentally ill parent can leave permanent, physical "fingerprints" on our brains.
When we as children encounter sudden or chronic adversity, excessive stress hormones cause powerful changes in the body, altering our body chemistry. The developing immune system and brain react to this chemical barrage by permanently resetting our stress response to "high", which in turn can have a devastating impact on our mental and physical health.
Donna Jackson Nakazawa shares stories from people who have recognized and overcome their adverse experiences, shows why some children are more immune to stress than others, and explains why women are at particular risk. Groundbreaking in its research and inspiring in its clarity, Childhood Disrupted explains how you can reset your biology - and help your loved ones find ways to heal.

"Childhood Disrupted helps shift the paradigm in our understanding of health and well-being by unveiling the role that early adversity plays in our physical and emotional adult health." (Amy Myers, author of The Autoimmune Solution)
An absolute must read for professionals or individuals who want a complete understanding of the latest data and insight into Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES). Includes personal stories of people who have suffered from the health impacts of living with stress injuries. A final examination of healing solutions is gratefully appreciated.
there were several parts of this book that dredged up long ago forgotten memories of my own childhood and it's interesting to look back and see the dynamics from an adult view. this book was well researched very current and gave me a lot to think about and to be grateful for as I've tried to not pass on to my children the loneliness and fear I had as a child of an alcoholic father verbally abusive mentally abusive to my mother, my sister and myself. didn't realize how much is abusiveness affected our whole lives!
I found some of the content in the stories highly disturbing but overall it has very good information. I loved that the book stresses that these challenges can be overcome and you can form new neural pathways in your brain. Discusses benefits of mindfulness, meditation and other non traditional therapies to assist in creating these new neural pathways . Pretty easy to listen to other than certain content in the stories, not too much brain biology that you need to be a doctor to understand but enough so you understand how the brain works and how past traumas affect you today. You really can't go wrong with this one.
After many years of chronic pain and thousands of dollars worth of medical bills. All the doctors claiming that there was nothing wrong with me. I finally found the solutions, through this book, to clear the wreckage of my past and live a bright loving future.
Thank you for giving me my life back. My daughter thanks you too !
I have been searching for a way to heal the pain from a stressful childhood. This book went a long way to helping me understand what my options are and why they will help. The narrator is easy to listen to and makes it pleasurable to listen for longer periods of time. I learned a lot and took away a lot of new resources as well.
While the first few chapters were both sad and angering for me, the content was excellent, with many references to clinical studies. The last three chapters were particularly helpful as they provided many excellent suggestions for both how to get help if you are a victim of childhood adversity and how not to continue that pattern with your children. Don't give up listening before the last three chapters - they will provide hope.
Narrator was excellent and very easy to listen to. My only suggestion is that she often mixed narrating from the author's voice to a victim's voice mid-sentence without a clear transition. A bit annoying/confusing but definitely not a deal breaker.
This is a life-altering book with genuinely helpful information. Every parent, physician, teacher, caregiver and human should read this book. I'm blown away.
For so many of our clientele the ACE test and principles in this book were the additional language we needed. My husband and I help people align the mind/heart/spirit and body through body work, movement and different types of exercise according to their needs.
I think everyone should read this book.twice.
