American Buffalo is a narrative tale of that hunt. But beyond that, it is the story of the many ways in which the buffalo has shaped our national identity. Rinella takes us across the continent in search of the buffalo's past, present, and future: to the Bering Strait Land Bridge; to buffalo jumps, where Native Americans ran buffalo over cliffs by the hundreds; even to the Bronx Zoo, where legend has it a depressed buffalo served as the model for the American nickel.
Rinella's erudition and exuberance, combined with his gift for storytelling, make him the perfect guide for a book that combines outdoor adventure with history, science, and the natural world. And yet it also tells us as much about ourselves as Americans as it does about the creature who perhaps best of all embodies the American ethos.

This is an exceptionally well written and researched book, and one that (like much of what Steven Rinella produces) weaves wonderful stories of adventure with practical advice, life lessons learned and useful information. This is recommended reading for hunters and non-hunters alike. Rinella's respect for the animal, wildlife and game management, as well as past and present hunters and conservationists, exemplifies what hunting is all about. This book is interesting, entertaining and informative. There's something for everyone here. The narration of this audiobook is also excellent.
Rinella has a unique way of sharing his adventures, through his thoughts, senses and emotions that keeps you wanting more and makes you feel like you're part of the experience. American Buffalo is fun, yet humbling and educational...an adventure and history lesson in one.
The performance is always going to be off when you know how the author talks and communicates. With Steve, he has a very unique way of communicating that is undeniably him, no narrator is going to achieve this.
About the book, it's a great historical book where Steven blends a personal story with the background historic significance of what is happening. Loved it.
This book gives such great details about his hunt, along with many interesting facts and stories about the animal's history. Worth every penny and highly recommended.
