American Buffalo: In Search of a Lost Icon

Steven Rinella won a lottery to hunt for a wild buffalo in the Alaskan wilderness. One of only four hunters that year who succeeded in killing a buffalo, he carried the carcass down a snow-covered mountainside and floated it four miles down a white-water canyon while being trailed by grizzly bears and suffering from hypothermia. Rinella found himself contemplating his own place among the 14,000 years' worth of buffalo hunters in North America and the place of the buffalo in the American consciousness.

Publisher's Summary

In 2005, Steven Rinella won a lottery to hunt for a wild buffalo, or American bison, in the Alaskan wilderness. One of only four hunters that year who succeeded in killing a buffalo, he carried the carcass down a snow-covered mountainside and floated it four miles down a white-water canyon while being trailed by grizzly bears and suffering from hypothermia. Through this experience, Rinella found himself contemplating his own place among the 14,000 years' worth of buffalo hunters in North America and the place of the buffalo in the American consciousness.

American Buffalo is a narrative tale of that hunt. But beyond that, it is the story of the many ways in which the buffalo has shaped our national identity. Rinella takes us across the continent in search of the buffalo's past, present, and future: to the Bering Strait Land Bridge; to buffalo jumps, where Native Americans ran buffalo over cliffs by the hundreds; even to the Bronx Zoo, where legend has it a depressed buffalo served as the model for the American nickel.

Rinella's erudition and exuberance, combined with his gift for storytelling, make him the perfect guide for a book that combines outdoor adventure with history, science, and the natural world. And yet it also tells us as much about ourselves as Americans as it does about the creature who perhaps best of all embodies the American ethos.

"An exciting read, with lots of educational bits"
Where does American Buffalo rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Great writing. I love Rinella's way of describing situations.

What does Patrick G. Lawlor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Really wished Steve narrated the book, but Patrick was the next best things. Loved his accents for the different characters lol

    "A good read!"

If you appreciate the history of our country and the wildlife within, you will enjoy reading/listening to this book. You can better understand the passion that Steven Rinella has for this specific animal and its history when listening to this book. I listen to Stevens podcasts and watch his TV show. I enjoy listening to his ideas and thoughts he has on certain topics and wish that he narrated his own book. With that said, I think the narrarator did a great job at getting across the points and passion that Steven would have done himself if he would have been the narrarator. I highly recommend this book!

"uniquely American essay on Bison and hunting"

having first heard Steve Rinella on podcasts I recognized his pattern of speaking and story telling in his writing: always telling a engaging tale, while at the same time playing with in the fair chase of ideas through science - Rinnella runs his questioning mind all over the terrain of what the Bison IS AND what it means to each of separately. An icon, a misunderstood animal, giver of life to the first peoples, the back of a Nickle, an mfer of a tough quarry and an enduring part of our landscape. you will enjoy the story and learn a new appreciation and perhaps respect by time this vivid hunting story winds down. highly recommended!

Thoroughly enjoyed. This book makes me yearn for a lost past and hopeful for a different future and the place Buffalo could play in it.
