Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: An ambitious title to say the least. But Bryson, arguably the best author-narrator around, gives us all an entertaining history lesson delivered in that voice-of-an-old-friend that has made all Bryson's work so enjoyable. This is no travelogue, as we are used to from Bryson, but it is more about life than any other "history" you'll hear. — Chris Doheny

Publisher's summary

One of the world’s most beloved and best selling writers takes his ultimate journey - into the most intriguing and intractable questions that science seeks to answer.

In A Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson trekked the Appalachian Trail - well, most of it. In In A Sunburned Country, he confronted some of the most lethal wildlife Australia has to offer. Now, in his biggest book, he confronts his greatest challenge: to understand - and, if possible, answer - the oldest, biggest questions we have posed about the universe and ourselves.

Taking as territory everything from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization, Bryson seeks to understand how we got from there being nothing at all to there being us. To that end, he has attached himself to a host of the world’s most advanced (and often obsessed) archaeologists, anthropologists, and mathematicians, traveling to their offices, laboratories, and field camps. He has read (or tried to read) their books, pestered them with questions, apprenticed himself to their powerful minds.

A Short History of Nearly Everything is the record of this quest, and it is a sometimes profound, sometimes funny, and always supremely clear and entertaining adventure in the realms of human knowledge, as only Bill Bryson can render it. Science has never been more involving or entertaining.

A wonderful journey through science

As the saying goes, I could not put it down. It was a captivating look at the many wonders of our world. The author presnted his points in everyday terms that were easily understood.

Fantastic Mind Food

A one of kind audiobook. My only problem is finding another one to live up to this one! Just a fantastic unbiased report on everything science. Whether or not your a believer in say "The Big Bang" or "Evolution" does not matter. The should be required reading for highschool!!!

Engaging performance & well-woven story

Where does A Short History of Nearly Everything rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of the best audio-books that I have listened to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

N/A

What does Bill Bryson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His tone is engaging and not overly scholarly, so as to put you to sleep.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Life just wishes to be.

Any additional comments?

I love that this book presents the history of scientific findings in a way that places humans out of a position of supremacy, while maintaining that our existence is miraculous. I think the objectivity/ complexity of his arguments bridge the gap between scientists and those that claim climate change is solely a cyclical mechanism. I think this book is important in initiating conversations for change and putting our species into perspective.

Fabulous

I need not waste a lot of words repeating what others have said. Bill Bryson puts out a fabulous product. I consider myself a knowledgeable individual but I learned a lot from the book - and it was a heck of a lot of fun to boot.

Entrancing

I have listened to this book on more than several occasions and each time I am fascinated. Struck again and again by how Bryson has woven our story. I'm sure I will listen again and again.

Five times and still going.

This is a great book. A few parts are not as interesting as others but I have found the the book has not left my audible. I am sure when I finish the next book in my library that I will not mind the sixth time around. Learn how fragale life is. It is well worth a credit.
