Publisher's summary

Los Angeles County park ranger Jack Carter is about to discover that not all is as it seems in his tranquil life. Once responsible for patrolling the many public parks, in particular the popular Griffith Park with its famous observatory and zoo, Jack is about to discover that a whole new kind of animal roams his woods.

The undead kind.

It begins when his brother, on leave from the military, arrives sick. Deathly sick. Jack's concern turns to alarm when his own flesh and blood turns on him, forcing the park ranger to take drastic measures.

Now searching for answers and help for his brother, Jack finds himself on the run from a lethal group of government agents - and from something monstrous that stalks his woods. Something not of this world...and hungry for flesh.

Critic reviews

"Be prepared to lose sleep!" (James Rollins, author of Bloodline and The Blood Gospel)
"I love this!" (Piers Anthony, author of On a Pale Horse and Luck of the Draw)
"J. R. Rain delivers a blend of action and wit that always entertains. Quick with the one-liners, but his characters are fully fleshed out (even the undead ones) and you'll come back again and again." (Scott Nicholson, author of Chronic Fear and After: The Shock)

It Was Ok - Hoping #2 Picks Up

I love a good Zombie story. This had the basics of a good story, but didn't make it. The lead character, a Park Ranger was likable enough, though his young teen daughter was fairly annoying. There are only maybe 3 tense confrontations, none of which are scary. The book just abruptly ended. No closure on anything, you are just left to wait for #2.

I liked the narrator and generally I enjoy J. R. Rain's books but this one was a little mild, not quite boring but there was nothing scary about it. I hope the next one picks up on the action and at least gives the reader a goosebump or two.

Interesting beginning

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book to someone who is VERY interested in zombies. Anyone marginally interested may find the story interesting, but not enough to take away an enjoyment of the genre. And the feel of the book is that it is building toward a "happy ending" in the final book, which, for me, is NOT what zombie novels are really about.

What three words best describe David Doersch’s voice?

The narrator does a credible job with both male and female voices. He could be a favorite of mine once I hear more of his work. Three words? Emotive, consistent, likeable.
