It was a flu season like no other. With the H1N1 virus running rampant throughout the country, people lined up in droves to try and attain one of the coveted vaccines. What was not known was the effect this largely untested, rushed to market, inoculation was to have on the unsuspecting throngs. Within days, feverish folk throughout the country convulsed, collapsed, and died, only to be reborn. With a taste for brains, blood, and bodies, these modern-day zombies scoured the lands for their next meal. Overnight the country became a killing ground for the hordes of zombies that ravaged the land.
This is the story of Michael Talbot, his family, and his friends: a band of ordinary people trying to get by in extraordinary times. When disaster strikes, Mike, a self-proclaimed survivalist, does his best to ensure the safety and security of those he cares for. Book one of the Zombie Fallout Trilogy follows our lead character at his self-deprecating, sarcastic best. What he encounters along the way leads him down a long dark road, always skirting the edge of insanity.
Can he keep his family safe? Can he discover the secret behind Tommy's powers? Can he save anyone from the zombie queen? Encircled in a seemingly safe haven called Little Turtle, Mike and his family, together with the remnants of a tattered community, must fight against a relentless, ruthless, unstoppable force. This last bastion of civilization has made its final stand. God help them all.

"Once you read the first few pages of Zombie Fallout, you're in for the series." (John Ramsey Miller, author of The Last Family)
“The word lighthearted doesn’t usually come to mind when we think of the zombie apocalypse, but Sean Runnette does a skillful job balancing humor with horror in this audio edition, which makes for an entertaining stroll with the walking dead…Runnette gives Talbot a dry, I-knew-this-was-going-to-happen-to-me-someday attitude that captures the wry spirit of Tufo’s prose. This provides a welcome departure from the doom and gloom of most zombie tales, and Runnette wrings plenty of chuckles from the material. Still, the narrator doesn’t forget that this is an apocalyptic horror story, making sure there are plenty of chills and thrills along the way.” (Publisher’s Weekly)
Mark Tufo's writing style draws you in and hooks you from the start. The characters are 'real', aside from the zombies of course, and I think that's what sets his stories apart from the rest. He has created a relatable set of characters that will make you laugh, gag and sometimes cry.
If you always have a book with you...
What a fantastic listen. I love Zombie books and this is a great one. I love the humor, it fits in perfectly, I think Mike is a great main character and the narrator does a fantastic job of bringing everyone 'to life'. A nice light and easy listen.
The story could use some more development, but with 7 books in the series, this was a great start.

ok...on with my review...
this is a funny book. hi-lar-ious! political correctness be damned. the story follows mike talbot and his family as the zombie apocalypse begins. mike lives in denver, colorado with his wife, tracy, 2 teenage boys, justin and travis, and his dog, henry, an english bulldog.
mike is in the shower when his wife screams. finding this unusual, mike dons a towel and heads downstairs to see what the heck is going on. tracy and travis are trying to shut the front door as mike appears. after they get the door closed, they implore mike to look through the peephole.
i'm inserting that part here:
"look out the peephole my wife whispered. i put my eye to the hole, expecting to see some little s#!t gangbanger out there tearing s#1t up. what i saw was a tongue. i see a tongue! some a$$hole is licking my peephole i said. then i laughed a little bit.
that sounded a little gross even to me. my wife didn't see the humor. her face still hadn't regained her color, and my son looked like he was about to hyperventilate.
my wife told me to look out the window, but she made no move to look with me. i'm not the brightest bulb on the string but even i knew at this point something was really messed up. i put on my best male bravado and stepped over to the window and rolled up the shade. to this day, i don't know how it happened, but i simultaneously felt my stomach lurch into my throat and my balls fill in the abandoned spot my belly left behind. there had to have been at least a couple dozen dead people milling about on our communal lawn."
so starts the zombie apocalypse and the quest for survival. mike's oldest son, justin, is working the night shift at walmart. mike, tracy, and travis set out to rescue justin.
while rescuing justin, they also rescue tommy. tommy is a greeter at walmart who gets stuck on the roof with justin. tommy is a jolly, seemingly retarded guy. he's huge, overweight, and always eating something sweet. mike and his family learn there is more to tommy than meets the eye. he hears a voice in his head. i won't tell you whose voice it is, but it's hilarious.
when mike and his family get back to their neighborhood, the entrance is blocked off by a bus full of armed people. jed, the neighborhood president, recognizes mike and lets him and his family through.
back at the house, mike finds his daughter, nicole, and her fiancé, brandon, have fled there. so starts the process of fortifying the neighborhood and venturing out for supplies.
on a supply run, mike notices a weird zombie, who just stares at him. later, he notices the same zombie following him. just what does this zombie have in store for mike? it's a joy to find out!
this story has it all! lots of humor. unimaginable gore. the power of a hoard. whew! when you get to that part, you just won't believe how well it's done. lots of zombie carnage. a great human nemesis, dergin. now, that's a great bad guy's name.
there are just so many superlatives that if i haven't convinced you by now, i never will. you know what they say...you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

This book was recommended to me by one of my co-workers and without question I'm hooked! I enjoyed this title so much.. Between the wonderful narration by Sean Runnette and the excellent writing of Mark Tufo, this book is easily one of the most enjoyable listens I have had.
To start the concept of the audiobook is something that would interest anyone with an open mind. The book is current (provided you are reading/listening it in 2012 or prior at least), humerus and witty. Mark Tufo did an excellent job creating the Talbot family and experiencing a majority of the story from Mike Talbot's perspective is hilarious to say the least. The way that Mike Talbot's mind work and the very situations he finds himself in makes him easily one of my favorite literary characters. You can't help but find the humor in even the most tragic circumstances in this book by just finding out how this man's brain tick.
Sean Runnette did AWESOME if you ask me. I agree with my co-worker who said he sounds a bit 'dry' in the beginning, but as the story progresses, he got better. It almost was a case where the story was carrying him in the beginning but as the book continued you found yourself warming up to his performance and by the end of the book you frankly can't fathom someone else narrating the book.
This is an excellent title, one of those nail-biters that ends with a cliff hanger but totally worth the listen! I would recommend this book to anyone who likes that witty, sort of satire, sarcasm riddled, modern titles!
I'm addicted. I can't seem to get enough. Most books that I listen to are your average Zombie Apocalypse books, but this one adds a sarcastic and humorous twist. The characters are easy to follow and relate to, and besides the books by Max Brooks, this series is by far my favorite.
Mike. Definitely Mike. Though Henry and BT are fighting for 2nd. Mike is a smart ass, something I can relate to. His stories, past and present, are hilarious and spontaneous.
He IS Mike. He brings the voice of the book to life with his impeccable timing, incredibly accurate voice inflections, and the ability to make you feel like you're actually there. He reads so well that I can almost see his facial expressions as he narrates through each passage.
It's hard to get that in a reader anymore.
Oh yes! I couldn't stop! It's a fan favorite at my work, and there are currently about 4 or 5 of us listening to, and comparing, this book on a regular basis.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this series!!! Don't pass it up!
I've read a couple of reviews that mentioned this was like slapstick (as in Zombieland) and I passed over the series for quite some time. I HATE anything slapstick! Boy am I glad I gave it a chance. I absolutely love zombie and/or apocalypse books and movies. Sure the book was chock-full of humor but it was not ridiculous nor did the characters behavior exceed the boundaries of common sense! I found it to be very entertaining and very believable. I thought the narrator did an excellent job and cannot imagine anyone else voicing Mike. I also liked the hint of paranormal vibe i.e., Tommy. It is in my top 3 reads! Please give it a chance. If you're like me and cringe when you see the Three Stooges don't worry - this book is not slapstick! Love it!!!
It was entertaining. Great first half, second half could have used more details. Items are left hanging that I thought should have been expanded. However, it could be made up for in the next book.
The story follows Mike Talbot and his family as they try to make sense of the new Zombie apocalyptic world. Mark Tufo does an excellent job developing multidimensional characters that force you to cry, laugh, and cringe at them and with them. This gory, intense, and frightening story is defiantly on my top 5 Zombie list. A MUST listen for ALL Zombie fans. Spoiler**** My favorite part was the mother and daughter's journey into town to purchase cigarettes only to find a perfect and frightening opportunity to extract revenge on a Zombie from their past....the dialog is hilarious. And of course the haunting Zombie kiss, which freaks me out to this day.
I really like Mike, I found myself relating to him in so many ways as he is sarcastic, witty, and a survivalist.
Spoiler*****Road trip to purchase cigarettes, the final breach of the wall as the Talbots move from one room to the next trying to stay ahead of the NEW intelligent Zombies.
The book provoked all emotions, some at the same time, mostly fear!
Starting the second book now.....CAN
I have truly enjoyed this book! I have heard a number of zombie books as of late, to be honest I was starting to get bored with them. Story line a bit cliche, narration boring, in a last ditch effort I downloaded this book. I was captured by the humor in the narration, Sean Runnette is great at this, made this a must read, the story line is a bit off the norm as well, made the entire experience great, have already downloaded the 2nd volume.
Most definitely recommend this! As a matter of fact I have! The characters are rich, the writing is real, the story is great....can't say enough good about this book and all the Michael Talbot stories.
Michael....I guess, it's hard to say. They are all so good.
Sean Runnette's voice has made me fall in love with Michael Talbot. He is the best I've heard.
Haven't a clue.....but this would be a fantastic film series.....I would definitely pay to see this.
What can I say. I love the Talbots. I love BT, Tracy, the kids, Alex, all of the characters, even Mrs. Denoe. I've already listened to all 4 twice and preaparing to start over and listen again while I wait for # 5 to be published.
Not the best zombie story, but I liked it. The main thing bringing this down, the narrater sound like the dad from Family Guy. Will get the next book, but as a priority.
I really enjoyed this, the humour that runs through it is great. Its different to the usual zombie end of the world theme, which does become more apparent in book 2. Which I downloaded as soon as I finished this one. Don't be put off by the humour it has plenty of sick bits.
The narration is really good, and following Mike, his family and friends on their journey is really good.
Buy this I don't think you will regret it.
"Apocalyptic awesomeness guaranteed!!!!!"
I must admit that i had this book for over a year before i listened to it, and now i know i wasted a year of my life! I should have listened to it as soon as it had downloaded. When it comes to the end of the world as we know it Mark Tufo has it nailed. Horror at its best, with a dark wry sense of humour that few writers can master. A wonderful cast of characters that you can help but love, laugh at, and root for. Go team Talbot!
My new Favourite Writer without a doubt. The Zombie Fallout series more addictive than crack (not that I've tried it) lol. oh and brilliantly narrated by Sean Runnette.
"Mark Tufo is a brath of fresh air"
FAN TAS TIC
Witty cripping great Characters all bond well big t is great good all round story
Great voice draws you in
Yes and did
Great series all tufo books are fab like having the same characters in different books but playing different parts and different outcomes well done Tufo
I bought this audiobook not expecting much and I was blown away but the characters and the story I loved it and could not wait to hear the next installment I would highly recommend the Zombie Fallout series of books if you like Zombies and great Characters.
Like everyone else in the western world I'm addicted to the zombie genre - why? I don't know, perhaps it's a brain disease or a government plot putting some drug into the water supply to keep us all happy - but that's not the point, the point is I've wasted half my credits trying to find a zombie novel that isn't utter crap - and I've failed. This isn't the worst of a bad bunch but it is one of the most annoying. The reader DOES sound like Peter Griffin which I could handle if the characters weren't so utterly stupid and constantly cracking wise. They wander about, as though being eaten was just a minor inconvenience, doing such stupid things, like going to fetch cigarettes without a gun, or arguing about what car to use because they're worried about the paint work! Infuriating!
Perhaps the worst thing about is that at no time do you think that any of the central characters are going to get bit or eaten because that would interfere with the awful American family cliche they inhabit.
Oh and were does the electricity, hot water and fuel come from in the post zombie world of Mr Tufo.
"Fantastic book for all Zombie Apocalypse fans!"
I loved listening to this book from Mark Tufo. Being a busy mum it's not viable for me to buy books to read as I never get more than five minutes to myself so I opted for the audible version. In go the headset and I was whisked into a world that was crumbling. The story had me ewwwing and chuckling, anxious and relieved. The smooth and warming voice of Sean Runnette even had me searching other titles he narrates so it was obvious that I added all the other titles in this series and others by Tufo to my 'to listen to' library.
I am a huge zombie fanatic and this book whet my appetite in a big way.
A must read/listen to for anyone who is interested in this genre!
"Drama and comedy in abundance"
Narrated brilliantly ... This has definitely hooked me for the next instalment!!! The characters linked really well ... It's like Jack Reacher meets zombies.
5 stars all the way.
"Amazing witty addictive"
Loved this audio book.
Very detailed and good writing, fun themes keep it light hearted with all the doom and gloom. Descriptive and humoured. I am hooked.
The entire season of this adventure is fantastic. this is by far the best written and read zombie story.
n.b. All the Michael talbot stories are fantastic
