Publisher's Summary

The Complete Collection of the Z Walkers series!

Hank, Collin, and Sara. A janitor, a thief, a personal trainer.

Three strangers in an increasingly strange city come together in an attempt to survive. With the infected crawling out of every crevice, they need to get to safety - now. Each wants a different direction: Hank still waits for his lady love to arrive so that they can head north, while Sara wants to get on a boat and get out onto the open waters. Collin...well, Collin just wants to be the aloof dangerous guy in a zombie apocalypse.

Little do they know, each of their best-laid plans is going to hit a rocky detour, and there's no telling just who will get out of everything alive.

Will any of them make it to safety before it's too late? Or will they end up just like the other mindless zombies beginning to fill the streets?

    "Enjoyable."

This tells the story of 3 different characters. We see Colin first. He is in the midst of a robbery when he first sees the Zombies. He is now stuck in a house with rapidly dwindling supplies and no chance of escape. Then there is Sara, a personal trainer who is at work when the outbreak happens. Finally Hank, a school janitor who is in the process of cleaning the school when he sees the Zombies. He phones home and his wife tells him that she will come for him. Hank sets about cleaning the school of the infected while waiting. Each character has his/her own troubles to deal with and each has to try stay alive. The final installment sees all 3 characters come together. Can they all survive?

Now, while I enjoyed this book tremendously, I did feel like I was missing something. Like maybe I started at book 2 instead of 1 because we don't get to see how the outbreak happened. We get no information at all about the where, how, and why. I think if we had that, then this would of been 5 stars.

Character wise. Colin was a bit whiny and annoying. Sara was capable and Hank was great. Each of them has a story to tell and each of them developed throughout. Plot wise, it was fast paced and entertaining. It didn't bring anything new to the genre but it was like reading an old favourite, comfortable and enjoyable.

Ben Kass was clear and concise and I enjoyed his narration. He gave each character their own personalities and I had no problem with seeing who was talking.

    "A Great Beginning!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Z Walkers: The Complete Collection to be better than the print version?

I don't know because I have not read the print edition. However, I always prefer audiobooks because it allows you to close your eyes and immerse yourself in the story.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed how the three stories came together but I would have liked a little more detail.

Which character – as performed by Ben Kass – was your favorite?

    Collin

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely. I found myself unable to stop listening to it. It was very exciting and left me wanting more.

    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this collection of stories. I felt it was a wonderful opening to what could possibly become a great epic adventure through the world of a Zombie Apocalypse. If Luke Shephard decides to write a follow up or even a disconnected continuation of this story or world I will definitely buy it. His character developement felt a little rushed but it was enough to be able to relate to the characters in the story. I am always an advocate of more detail but sometimes in a books like these it would retract from the tempo of the book which I thought was perfect. Overall I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of apocalyptic scenarios and Zombies. Great Book. Thank you.

"Great read for fans of adventure or zombie stories"

This book started out just a little slow in the beginning. I liked that our main characters didn't automatically know that it was the zombie apocalypse. It always seems like they instinctively know what to do and where to go. I really liked that these people are more 'WTF?' and sometimes seem to get lucky in their survival, while sometimes they need to rely on their abilities (normal ones!) to keep going or keep each other's spirits up (relatively speaking, everyone is freaked out and rightfully so).

The narrator did a great job. He has a strong, smooth voice with the ability to instill excitement.

I really couldn't connect with any of the characters in this book.I found them one dimensional and the choices they made were silly. The first three chapters are devoted to one character each and in the final chapter is when their stories converge. The narrator just "reads" the book to the listener. The mispronunciation of basic words like breathed & gored was a definite turn off. "Three zombie stories in one"

This book was divided into 4 sections, three POV and a final chapter where the group is together. I was torn on this book. It is very listenable. The narrator is clear and easy to understand, but he is defiantly "reading to you". I wasn't able to transition into "storytelling mode" like I am with other narrator. The story wasn't bad, but I kept getting caught up on little details that made no sense. I have never been to a gym where you needed key cards to lock a door or move around or where a curtain can hold back a zombie. However the book is easy to follow and moderately entertaining. You don't love the characters, but you don't hate them. All in all a fair effort.

    "Pretty Standard Zombie Fare"
What made the experience of listening to Z Walkers: The Complete Collection the most enjoyable?

Storyline moves along quickly and the narrator does a good job with the book.

    Any additional comments?

As stated in the title this is a pretty standard zombie story. None of the three major characters are prepared for any kind of crises, least of all the walking dead. The storyline follows each character for a section and brings them together at the end. It appears the sections were written at different times. A more effective update would be to interweave the stories, telling each a bit at a time.
Overall a solid effort with a few small dramatic surprises, but it needs a twist or element to separate it from lots of other similar efforts.

    Story
    "Slow moving zombies! yay!"

    3.5 / 5

Two things annoy me about recent 'zombie' movies - 1) no one ever uses the Z word, as if they are in a world where Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" and everything it spawned never existed; and 2) the 'zombies' run.

Luke Shepard avoids both these peeves of mine, instantly giving him a big tick. These are slow, ambling, mindless undead who danger not come in them catching you, but in sheer weight of numbers and characters making dumb mistakes that trap themselves. And our main characters actually call them zombies. They acknowledge the pop culture icon as what it is, rather than developing an in universe excuse for why they are given another name.

The story itself is made up of four chapters/parts. The first three parts each focus exclusively on one character - the janitor Hank, the personal trainer Sara, and the petty thief Collin. These stories are their 'origin' stories, telling what they did in their first few hours/days or the zombie outbreak. The fourth part sees the three of them together, trying to survive. Beyond this the scope of the book is fairly tight. While there is some minor news reports from outside our characters immediate scope there is not much. How the outbreak occurs, what caused it, where it is, etc. is not covered. We only know as much as the immediate characters and not much more.

The book is not ground-breaking but they are enjoyable. As long as you go in expecting it not to redefine the zombie genre you will likely enjoy it.

Ben Kass does a good with the narration. Clear, easy to understand. He imparts character and emotion. He keeps the individual characters distinct, so that it is easy to know who is saying what. Wouldn’t hesitate to pick up another book he has read.
