Paranormal-urban fantasy book lover!

This book was a good listen. It had all the components, action, humor, romance. I really liked how I never knew who was good or bad and it was not predictable. That's one thing I love in a book, when the author keeps us guessing, and she did it here with this book.
I cannot wait to start book 2
I would def recommend this book to anyone who likes action, suspense, humor and a bit of romance.
Julia Whelan did an excellent job narrating this book.

parent, roller derby girl, retro clothing collector, and lover of all things paranormal and urban fantasy!
I bought this book because I love Rachel Caine's other series. I was expecting something involving more paranormal type scenarios, and when I realized it wasn't full of vampires, ghosts, or weres, I thought I was going to be disappointed. But I was not at all! It is a good story and a good first book of the series. I will definitely check out the next in the series! :)
I bought this title because the premise sounded interesting and to my mind would hold a few possible twists and turns. I have never consumed any of Rachel Caine's work before so it was a bit of a risk; however, I had the credit and was between series and no real burning titles on my list at that moment, simply bought it. I am glad I did. Being a fan of Zombie books and movies, this was certainly a twist on the concept. The plot moves along nicely and I have recommended to my wife as a good story she might enjoy.
This was my first experience with Julia Whelan and see did spectacularly in my opinion! I didn't struggle with tracking the characters as she voiced them. I will not hesitate to listen to any book when she is narrating.
My only regret is ‘Two Weeks Notice’ isn't due out until August 7th, uggghhhh! I dearly hope that Julia is already recording the audio version of this new tale.
I can only imagine where this next tale will lead Bryn Davis, but there are too many place this story can go just yet; given the challenges of living life as one of the Returne Addicts. Rachel you have pushed us into a whole wide world in this series starter for new genre character, Zombie Heroine, Bryn Davis!
What if dying wasn't the end? And that a corporation or government could bring you back and hold you hostage (giving new meaning to wage slave)?
As the first novel of a new series I am very interested to see where we go from this novel, it was very open ended at the end and it will be interesting to see what happens next.
I was consistently annoyed at the main character throughout the book because she acts naïve, stupid and incompetent even though she is supposed to be a smart, tough ex-soldier.
She is unable to defend herself almost every time someone tries to beat her up or kill her. She knows that she is constantly being monitored, but keeps insisting that the two male protagonists tell her their personal life stories and classified/dangerous secrets and gets mad every time they do not comply. She “can’t workout” why having her baby sister stay at her apartment while someone is trying to kill her would be a “security breach.” She does all this while wallowing in self-pity most of the book.
Reviewing Romance & Urban Fantasy
Not your "classic" zombies but still an interesting concept.
Why I Listen
I've had Working Stiff on my TBR since it's release day and after listening to a sample of the audio, the narration sounded like one I would enjoy. And I was right. The story and narration both kept me entertain. Julia Whelan get a great job with the voices and timing of the narration. I've already purchased the next book on audio.
Bryn Davis has the worst first day on a job ever.... She dies and then comes back as a "zombie".
After serving in the military and dealing with dead bodies, Bryn thought she would be a good match in the postion as the new funeral director at Fairview Mortuary. But little did she know that her sales training was not going to help her when she stumbles upon a secret side business her new boss is running from the basement of the mortuary.
Bryn quickly finds herself wrapped up in government and corporate red tape and plans to take over the world, while still having a little time for romance.
Issue(s) I Had
The only real issue I had with Working Stiff is that I had a hard time believing that Bryn, who was over in Iraq for 4 years would be so "helpless" and naive at times. I'm hoping after the events toward the end of the story that we get a tougher Bryn in the next book, Two Week's Notice.
Will I Continue the Series?
Yes. I enjoyed the world that Caine has created and I look forward to seeing what's next for Bryn.
Looking for Something Similar?
White Trash Zombie series by Diana Rowland
This book is GREAT, granted I am only 2hrs into it... But it usually takes a while to really get me 'hooked'. Not this time. I am SO excited for this new series. I loved the Morganville series but couldn't get into my last purchase from her "Undone". So, I am excited and felt the need to SHARE!
Also, LOVE the narrator, she is one of my faves too.
Just looking for an enjoyable story! Books are my passion.
I thoroughly enjoyed this! I listened in one sitting. The writing was original, one I hadn't heard of before. I enjoy Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires and this was a refreshing change! Truly looking forward to book 2.
riveting, edge of your seat storytelling. can't wait for another book from this author or the sequel.
I live to ride my bike.
If you like the traditional brains eating decomposing zombie story this is not for you. No one eats brains and decomposing is nothing permanent. This is more of a tech story with nanos making the zombies.
Bryn is not my kick ass heroin but she does have a bleeding heart. Her military experience should be nonexistence for all the good it gives her. In her first "gun" battle, she forgot to raise her gun. Because she is slightly wimpy, I did not give the overall a high rating. The uniqueness of the story is why I gave it a 4 and it is why I am down loading the book now.
So Bryn just happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Her first day on the job is the last day of her human existence. Because she dies from the over sight of the "good" guys she becomes one of the living dead. She then becomes the pawn of a pharmaceutical company. In an effort to cure cancer the company creates a weapon of ... zombie proportions.
In efforts to find who stole the formula, she becomes the bait. In the 12 hrs and 7 min. story there were three incidents she was able to get off good shorts. Considering how she insisted on having a gun, I expected more of her. When she is really faced with a crisis it is her experience as a funeral director not her military experience that is used.
There were a few surprises, which is expected in company espionage. There is the formula love interest in the back ground of the story. Fortunately, that is not hot and heavy in this installment. Since one of the three kisses occurs at the end I expect it will get more touchy feelly in the next one. I shutter when I think of a zombie and non zombie being touchy feelly.
In the Diana Rowland novels, I can take a little zombie loving because the heroin's lover is a zombie too. Oh if you have not read a kick ass female brain eating zombie novel try that one.
She is turned zombie. Depended on a drug, which she needs daily to live. The pharmaceutical company wants to find and stop the black market use of the drug. Of course Bryn existence is constantly in jeopardy. She cannot manufacture the drug and that is the carrot which the pharmaceutical hangs over her. Here is where the decomposing occurs. Without the daily injections her body begins to decompose. The icky part the person remains cognitive while the flesh is falling off their bones.
That is as much as I will give away. This is not a stellar literary novel, but as far as a contemporary fansty goes it has a unique story.
