Publisher's summary

Richard K. Morgan has received widespread praise for his astounding 25th-century novels featuring Takeshi Kovacs, and has established a growing legion of fans. Mixing classic noir sensibilities with a searing futuristic vision of an age when death is nearly meaningless, Morgan returns to his saga of betrayal, mystery, and revenge, as Takeshi Kovacs, in one fatal moment, joins forces with a mysterious woman who may have the power to shatter Harlan's World forever.

Once a gang member, then a marine, then a galaxy-hopping Envoy trained to wreak slaughter and suppression across the stars, a bleeding, wounded Kovacs was chilling out in a New Hokkaido bar when some so-called holy men descended on a slim beauty with tangled, hyperwired hair. An act of quixotic chivalry later and Kovacs was in deep: mixed up with a woman with two names, many powers, and one explosive history.

In a world where the real and virtual are one and the same and the dead can come back to life, the damsel in distress may be none other than the infamous Quellcrist Falconer, the vaporized symbol of a freedom now gone from Harlan's World. Kovacs can deal with the madness of AI. He can do his part in a battle against biomachines gone wild, search for a three-centuries-old missing weapons system, and live with a blood feud with the yakuza, and even with the betrayal of people he once trusted. But when his relationship with "the" Falconer brings him an enemy specially designed to destroy him, he knows it's time to be afraid.

After all, the guy sent to kill him is himself: but younger, stronger, and straight out of hell.

Wild, provocative, and riveting, Woken Furies is a full-bore science fiction spectacular of the highest order from one of the most original and spellbinding storytellers at work today.

Woken Furies is the third Takeshi Kovacs novel, following Altered Carbon and Broken Angels.

"On Harlan's World...

... Kovacs is quite a common name. Everyone knows how to pronounce it. This guy didn't."

First, let me say that my problem is not that there is a different narrator for this last book in the series, so much as it is that this narrator is terrible, and apparently didn't do a lick of research. Clearly he didn't even read or listen to the first book, or he would have known how to pronounce "Takeshi Kovacs." (Not with the 'k' sound, but with a 'ch' sound).

Even if I didn't have the previous narration to draw on, or narration from any of the dozens of other books I've listened to, I would say that this narrator is terrible. To me, there is no differentiation between characters except male or female, or the echo versions of each. There was also no nuance to the voice that would give you the sense, which we tend to take for granted, that a character is going from a thought, to speaking. I kept wondering when he was going to say "did I just say that, or think it?"

I've listened to about 20 minutes of this book, but I cannot imagine putting myself through listening to the rest. I would suggest that anyone who values the quality of narration in an audio book just plain avoid this one.

Is this a joke?

First two books were narrated by a pro. This seems to be someone's Canadian brother-in-law who was owed a favor.

It would seem that this guy did not read the first two, did not read through this one before recording it, and likely has never read a book aloud before this.

I didn't make it through half an hour before having to turn it off. Can't even follow the story because I'm too annoyed with the narrator saying "Ko-vaKS" (we all know, even people who have only READ the book, that it's pronounced "Ko-vach").

To the narrator: Sorry to be harsh, but these audio books cost money, and I have a very minimal set of expectations. Could I do better? Probably not, but I'd have at least made an effort.

To the author: your books are awesome. The first two in this series are brilliantly narrated. Why, why, why would you allow this?

a first

Altho I liked his previous novels I was unable to finish listening to this book. Take a mediocre novel, add truly unfortunate production choices and top it with a reading in which the vocal interpretation of characters approached comic book believability and you've exceeded my tolerance for pain. I still look forward to his next book.

A Big Disappointment

I wish I had read the other reviews before I purchased this audiobook, it would have saved me from wasting a credit. The reader that takes over for Todd Mclaren in this Takeshi Kovacs novel, William Dufris, seems to believe the best thing you can do for a noir detective story is deliver it in a John Wayne-style. The reverb that they choose to use at places in the story is distracting and amature-ish, and the pronunciation of the protagonist's name is different. After listening to 20 minutes of this audiobook I've given up on the audiobook and will purchase a hard copy.

What a disappointment

While the other two Kovacs novels made the jump to audiobook in classic form and are truely "must hears" this audiobook is one of the great disappoints I've had in three years of Audible membership. I know Audible doesn't do the recordings and that's the only reason I haven't cancelled my membership over this horrible rendition of another fantastic book from Richard K Morgan. If you liked Morgan's other three novels, then buy this one in print, the audio version isn't worth the time.

William Dufris...

The hyper-overacted narration by William Dufris, coupled with utterly ridiculous reverb effects almost ruin this story. Maybe Dufris is great as Bob the Builder, but he can sure stink up a sci-fi story with his dazzling array of stupid voices and accents.

Not so good narration on this volume

Morgan's books are fantastic, the narrator on the Altered Carbon & Broken Angels (Todd) is great match to the books, gritty first person. The narrator on this book just doen't make it, book is great, this narrator is not.

Horrible Narrator

The first two books of this series were awesome, but I can't get past the narrator of this third book. His voice is abrasive, overdone, and he mispronounces Takeshi Kovacs's name. I'm probably going to go buy the book and read it instead.

Virtual Interrogation

This reading of Woken Furies is nothing less than 22 hours of virtual interrogation. When you start listening you notice that there is a new narrator.
William Durfis is a good narrator; I've heard him before. Then you notice what will become the endless and unneeded use of reverb on the narrator's voice. Then you will notice the fact that the narrator doesn't even know how to pronounce Takeshi Kovacs name. (This is where they put the blowtorch to your feet) HOW can the producer and Richard himself have not told the narrator how to pronounce Kovacs name correctly when Richard made such a big point of how his name was pronounced in the first two books? The combining of not so special voice effects with the mispronouncing of Kovacs name is nothing less than torture. Know that this book is a great read, but this reading of Woken Furies has turned a great story into a grind right to the death..for all of you who are interested in buying this recording; DON'T. Buy the book and read it.
If you listen to this recording you will find yourself saying,"That's f_ _ king ENOUGH."

Mistake Made

well I did it, I went against my better judgment and the other reviews I have seen on this book used a credit on this book, BIG MISTAKE I listened to about a minute of it before I turned it off and started the other book I downloaded at the same time. The recording quality reminds me of listening to a tech instructor drone on about nothing to an empty room. Tip by this book contact the publisher and complain about the quality of the recording of it. 1 thing that did surprise me was the sample of the book was just the standard start of every audio book here, the audible start and the publisher you never got a chance to listen to the reader before you purchased. If I would have heard it before I used the credit I would have never downloaded it.
