Publisher's summary

In The Mage Winds trilogy, which began with the best-selling novel Winds of Fate, author Mercedes Lackey continues the epic that started with her first published book. Arrows of the Queen introduced listeners to the remarkable land of Valdemar, the kingdom protected by its Heralds - men and women gifted with extraordinary mind powers - aided and served by their mysterious Companions - horselike beings who know the many secrets of Valdemar's magical heritage. None but the Companions remember the long-ago age when high magic was lost to Valdemar as the last Herald-Mage gave his life to protect his kingdom from destruction by dark sorceries.

But now the protective barrier set so long ago over Valdemar is crumbling, and with the realm imperiled by the dark magic of Ancar of Hardorn, Princess Elspeth, Herald and heir to the throne, has gone on a desperate quest in search of a mentor who can teach her to wield her fledgling mage-powers and help her to defend her threatened kingdom.

Elspeth & Darkwind

A wonderful second part in the saga of Elspeth, Darkwind, Skif, and Nyara. Their training continues and the threat of Falconsbane remains.

Can barely stand the narrator

Fantastic story, but the narrator mispronounced basic words like "repertoire," "err," and "Talia." I've been reading/listening to the whole series and can't wait to move on to a new narrator. I don't know if she wasn't allowed to correct typos or what but it doesn't excuse the fact that most of her voices are bad fits for the characters, and the women all sound very similar. Some of the fictional names and races Karen White chooses to pronounce in wildly different ways than the narrators of the rest of the series. Wouldn't seek her out again.

Great Story

Where does Winds of Change rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This entire series has always been a favorite of mine and I remember why with each time I listen or read the book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Elspeth has always been my favorite character. She's improved quite a bit in this book and has stepped away from her royal duties and has just become herself.

Did Karen White do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Karen White did an admirable job with attempting to distinguish the voices. There were moments when she spoke for Darkwind and Firesong and I couldn't tell them apart. The voices are definitely less gravelly in this book, which I appreciated. I still disliked how she made Elspeth sound; it was a cross between an airhead and overly snobbish heiress.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It stole my attention for hours on end. I spent a great deal of time with my ear buds in my ears as I gamed or worked. It's amazing how Mercedes Lackey can paint entire pictures of the world with such detail. I love the relationship between Elspeth and Darkwind. The fact that they didn't rush into a relationship and became friends before they did really brings a great deal of reality and sweetness to the story.

A wonderful story!

The narrator does a great job over all but mispronounced a number of things that are easily searchable and actually exist. It pulled me out of the story for a small time each time it happened.

hate the narrator

I cannot stand listening to a book after a different book from the same author about the same people and their names are pronounced differently and stupid grammatical and enunciation pronunciation mistakes are made. does lack of attention to detail is very distracting

Very enjoyable

I like this one so much better than the first, although the narrator still pronounces characters from the Arrows of the Queen book series names wrong.

Another fine sequel

Another captivating story in the Valdemar universe. Mercedes Lackey never fails! Even after 30 years, her books are fresh and exciting. The narrator also does her stories justice, with good pacing and distinction of all characters. Can't wait for the next one!

Much improved

The story is the continuation of the outlander Elspeth in a new and strange land, learning more about herself and the people she has found herself among. Along with various cohorts and their own growth. The stories as a whole are really about growing and learning yourself (or themselves) and over coming obstacles. However it is set in a fantasy world, with real magic, mind magic, spiritual magic, mystical creatures and fantastical races. Over all I find the whole stories wonderful and amazing, through they are geared to a younger crowd. Teens & Young adults.

The narrator in book 1 by the end was starting to annoy me and I wasn't sure I would be able to finish the series (listening I have already read them). But I decided since I love the books so much to give the second one a try. I am glad I did. Someone must of coached her. Her voices for different characters are still not very strong or the greatest choices, but they do not take from the story and someone has coached her on the pronunciations of the world she was reading as that was my greatest irritant in the first one I am extremely thankful for it, and have now finished this one and moved on to the third one.
