Publisher's summary

Prince Roger is coming home, but home isn't what it was when he left. Traitors have murdered his brother and sister, his nieces and nephews. His mother, the empress, is still alive but in the hands of Roger's own biological father, who controls her through drugs and physical and psychological torture. A new heir to the throne has been conceived, and once the child is born his mother will no longer be necessary to the traitors' plans. Prince Roger must somehow retake the empire from the men who control it before his new brother is born and his mother dies. It's an impossible task, but Prince Roger knows all about impossible tasks.

Very good amalgam of the best in the genre.

What we have here is not a groundbreaking masterpiece. It is not the greatest series ever written. It borrows (maybe a touch too heavily) from ideas first introduced by the true pioneers of sci fi, especially military scifi. One can easily find traces of Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert, Isaac Asimov, and others within the series' proverbial pages, and that can sometimes make the thrills feel a little bit contrived. That said, there's a major caveat coming - what it does is put all of that together really, really well. it's like riding a roller coaster - as long as you don't get lost in the minutiae of "been there, done that" moments, you'll find yourself having a really good time getting yanked around by the seat of your pants.

stefan rudnicki has a great voice

these books are the best, I read them too. but I gained new enjoyment listening to rudnicki's character voices. especially the silly ones or the ones with strong accents.

good end to the series

Overall, a good book. It was a fitting end to the series. The start is slow. It has been a while since i read the book. so i had forgotten how much is recapped in the beginning. I spent a maddening hour listening to a recap of the first three books.

Really like this story I have listened to three or five times from start to finish.

A satisfying conclusion

I was surprised to read that some reviewers considered that the book was a quick ending to the series. To me it seemed well paced with plenty of action mixed with strategy. It is a fitting conclusion to the whole story, even though the door is open to a sequel.

lots of fun

A different emphasis in the preceding books in the series, but still a lot of fun. Don't look for character development here, or even tremendous amounts of combat. Still a lot of fun, and a slightly different Weber-esk take on Space combat. A good completion to this series, yet clearly left open-ended for more to come one day.

Again it's Fantastic

I think I've already reviewed this book. Any way this is for the whole series. Excellent most excellent, that's all there is.

Wonderful

As with most books by Weber or Ringo, the reader is left with a desire for more. This is book four, the final book of the series, but I was left hanging. The bad guy got away, and there seems be more of the story to be told. I have read the series at least four times, and now I have listened to this well done recitation. I have been fascinated by the depth of the characters, the detail that brings life to the entire story, but I still find myself with a feeling that there is more of the story still to be told.

Good "marines" book

this book is all about marines....plots, planned assault, conspiracy and..a mission and their honor and duty to fulfill it, in a future planet Earth.
If you like milatary novels, this will work out well.

Solid Sci-fi

Plenty of tech jargon for the geeks. Great characters, human and alien to love and hate!
