Publisher's Summary

From storm drains, illegal dumps, and flooded landfills, all of North America's most advanced technology flows down the Mississippi River -microchips, nano-devices, pharmaceuticals, genetically modified seed - and lodges in the Louisiana delta.

Out of this mire emerges a self-organized neural net, drifting in the water: the Watermind. It can freeze, boil, condense, and move -seemingly at will.

Both infuriating and sympathetic, C. J. Reilly is a brilliant, sexy, self-destructive MIT dropout running away from Cambridge and the suicide of her ironic, emotionally-distant father. She is working as a laborer in Devil's Swamp near Baton Rouge, cleaning up a small pollution spill, when she and her new lover, Max, discover the mysterious Watermind.

Reilly's more interested in investigating it than containing it, but when it kills someone and escapes into the Mississippi, corporations, governments, protesters, the Coast Guard, and a really wacky underground journalist get involved. And there's no longer any question that it must be destroyed before it reaches the ocean.

Watermind is Philip K. Dick meets "The Blob," a postmodern combination of camp SF motifs and writerly ambition attacking serious subjects.

    "Who can I like?"

I liked the premise of the book and the narrator did a good job. The story was OK but there was too much explicit sexual detail that took away from the story. Also there was no character that I could like. My personal preference maybe, but the main character, CJ was too much of a "loose cannon" that inflicted chaos in her own life by her unrestrained actions and immaturity. Her lifestyle was not very likable and made her not very likeable because her recklessness only served herself. She hurt all the closest people around her. I could not find anything I liked about her. Max was the most likable character, but he seemed to just bend with the wind and be in control of nothing. The best characters will draw the reader into their risk taking by hooking the reader in some way with their personality or likableness, but I found that lacking in CJ completely. This was definitely a read once book as none of the characters could be a friend with the reader except Max, but he seemed to be well defined as one of the weakest characters.

    "Not a good read"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

The story is a good idea but written for the 13 year old little boy in mind. There was no need so many descriptions of soft skin or pink rosebud nipples and I lost interest half way through. Watermind was a crude attempt at soft porn when a simple love story would have sufficed.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Tanya Eby Sirois?

Tanya Eby Sirois did a good job reading with a nice soothing voice.

    "Great SciFi Read"

Mr. Buckner has written a very entertaining, suspenseful, and thoughtful contemporary SciFi book. The book is well done, the characters exhibit a realness rarely found in other books in this genre, and the plot is very well constructed. I enjoyed all aspects of this book and encourage other to read (listen) to it as well.

    "Ok."

Wasn't a great story. Way a terrible story. Narration was excellent. Just sort of pedestrian.

    "Awful!!!"

Don't waste your credits on this garbage. I listen to a ton of audiobooks and will almost always listen to the whole book even if I'm not absolutely enthralled with it. I listned to about a quarter of this book before I pulled the plug. The book is poorly written and I found myself not really caring about what happened next.
