Story okay but ploting uneven

It took far to long to get the meat of the story. At first the book read like a slice of life story and all the while I kept thinking to myself when is the story going to start. And then my wandering mind soon picked up on what this was all about even before the story got started. If you take to long to get the point, someone else will get there first. And what was revealed at stories end, was what I had figured out all along.

Still, I liked the action that starts about half way in. And it was an unusual enough setting and situation to keep my interest throughout. I did not realize I lucked into reading the first book in the series. And while there was enough there to make me interested to see what happens in Book 2, Book 1 I was just okay.

Pretty good military sci-Fi

Forget the cartoonish cover art. This book deserves better. Granted it has a slow start that relies on clever banter to hold your interest. But once the platoon gets into the fight, they’re off and running.

A witty rendition of the usual military SF story

Valor's Choice stays surprisingly close to the standard model for military science fiction featuring the ubiquitous space marines - super-competent sergeants, inexperienced officers, gruff but endearing grunts, and sketchy politicians pitted against waves of less sophisticated, but deadly enemies. Think David Weber or John Ringo and you won't be far off.

Tonya Huff adds a couple nice elements that elevate the otherwise standard (but still enjoyable) storyline. First, she has a bit of a sense of humor that makes the story occasionally quite funny. Secondly, her characters are more well-rounded than the traditional military fare, making the back story more interesting than most.

Overall, if you like military science fiction, you'll like this. If you think you might like it, this is a good place to s tart.

Strong female lead character

So often female leads are meant to be assertive and strong but come off lacking in those areas. Tanya does a great job at displaying a stong female and not someone who is looking for a man to complete her. She is already complete, god dammit. I know she later gets a love interest, but that doesn't deminish her baddassness.

well written military sci fi

This audio book was quite enjoyable. the voice actress did a great job portraying all the characters, both male and female. the story took its time setting up the characters and the environment, but once the action starts, it moves at a breakneck speed and is quite exciting.

Very Good Listen!

Marguerite tells the story written by Tanya so well that you forget that it is fiction. Science fiction at that. What a pleasure it is to be on the ear-bud end of this purchase. Thanks for the good stuff!

Good read!

I really enjoyed the book. The main character is a strong female who kicks butt. Tanya Huff came up with some interesting aliens especially the di'Taken. If you like military science fiction, this is definitely worth a credit.

Loved this series!!

I read this series as fast as I could. I liked the action and humor. I also liked the fact there wasn't too much detail in tactics and technology. As some one who has never served or is techno stupid it is easy to understand. Ready for the next in line.

Would you listen to Valor's Choice again? Why?

I would not listen again but to read. I always feel a missed a little something or misunderstood.

What did you like best about this story?

I am a huge fan of a strong female lead. The author seems to know a great deal about the military. The stories was fun to listen to as a US Army Vet.

Which scene was your favorite?

Anytime she was thinking what was really on her mind but not saying. I know I have gone through this

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Sir, my mother and farther were married.

Any additional comments?

This is a wonderful read or listen to. I laughed, smiled knowingly, and enjoyed the characters. I will get the next in this series.

Good Book, BUT...

I thoroughly enjoyed the story line and interplay between the characters. However, I found the frequent use of the F word offensive, I know Marines talk like that, but if I wanted to hear it, I'd be a Marine. For this reason, and for this reason ONLY, I won't be listening to any more of the books in this series. It's a shame because, as I said, the story itself is excellent.
