Publisher's summary

The new novel in the hit New York Times best-selling Dresden Files series.

The Warden Morgan has been accused of treason against the Wizards of the White Council - and there's only one, final punishment for that crime. He's on the run, wants his name cleared, and needs someone with a knack for backing the underdog. Someone like Harry Dresden....

Now, Harry must uncover a traitor within the Council, keep a less-than-agreeable Morgan under wraps, and avoid coming under scrutiny himself. And a single mistake may cost someone his head - someone like Harry

Critic reviews

“Fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Tanya Huff will love this series.” (Midwest Book Review)

“Superlative.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot.” (Booklist, starred review)

Another great Harry Dresden Story!

What a dynamic combination Jim Butcher and James Marsters are! Jim's stories are fabulous and Marsters does a terrific job of bringing them to life!

No happy ending this time; Big Sad

Harry communes with the spirit of the land like that movie Avatar. Morgan is not friendly. Molly makes mistakes Harry has a crappy lovelife. We don't like Thomas anymore. It's another Jim Butcher's wild ride, only this one hurts in the end. :(

Liked it more as it went

I wasn’t really feeling this book through the first half but I’m glad I stuck with it. I was thinking of giving up on this series but this book reeled my back in.

Worthy Addition To The Series

Fast paced. Excellent narration. And Harry Dresden is, as always, an appealing protagonist.

It's possible to appreciate the book as a paranormal mystery stand-alone without a great deal of knowledge of what has gone on before. However, I think it helps to be familiar with the series as a whole since almost all of the characters in the novel were introduced in previous installments of the series.

Donald Morgan gets a bad rap but all in all he's a pretty cool dude

Better and better

About book 2 or 3, Butcher said that his fans felt like that is really where the series took off.....no kidding! this has become a series that I can't wait to listen to. sometimes I take a long way home just so I can keep listening. And Marsters is a phenomenal narrator. Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go buy the next one.

Best book in the series

I have enjoyed and even loved every book in this series. But this one has to be the all around best. The number of plot twists and character revelations had me constantly amazed. Several times I figured the book was wrapping up and it kept going with even more twists!
