Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In the fourth novel of the Iron Druid Chronicles, two-thousand-year-old Druid Atticus O’Sullivan must pay his debts to cunning trickster god Coyote, a task that includes battling undead creatures of the night as well as a relentless hound of Hel and the goddess of death who commands it.

“[Kevin] Hearne is a terrific storyteller with a great snarky wit. . . . Neil Gaiman’s American Gods meets Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden.”—SFFWorld

Cutting a deal with a trickster god rarely goes well for any human brave or foolish enough to try it, but Atticus doesn’t feel like he has a choice. With members of the Norse pantheon out for his blood, he can’t train his apprentice in peace, so he asks Coyote to help him fake his own death. The cost, however, might wind up being every bit as high as if he’d made no deal at all.

There are things hiding in the Arizona desert that don’t want any company, and Coyote makes sure they know Atticus has arrived. And then there's the hound of Hel, Garm, who’s terribly difficult to shake and not at all convinced that Atticus is dead.

Being tricked by a trickster is par for the course. But it’s the betrayal from someone he thought was a friend that shakes Atticus to the core and places his life in jeopardy. The real trick, he discovers, might be surviving his own faked death.

Includes Kevin Hearne’s novella “Two Ravens and One Crow”

Very good story, not great narration.

the story was very good, the narration left something to be desired. it sounded like he was attempting some kind of film noir feel but came off dry mouthed and tired.

What Can I Say?

Any additional comments?

I'm not waiting for credits, I'm buying these books outright....and I'm forcing myself to slow down and listen to others between my favorite Druid's adventures.

For this one, I found I easily became quite attached to a couple of the lesser characters. And, I realized that that is how good this series is..even lesser characters have full voices and rich stories.

As always I waited eagerly for Oberon's commentary, and those are many of my laugh-out-loud moments. I've found myself looking at my German Shepherd and wondering if these thoughts (or similar) go through her head. Sadly, for her, I don't speak dog. She will just have to patiently wait for sausages until her owner gets a clue.

My only complaint so far is the sexual tension between Atticus and his apprentice. It feels like the author wrote the whole book then went back (at an editor's suggestion, I'll wager) to add it in. It's incomplete, not entirely believable, and either unnecessary or needs further explanation. I'm going with the latter being included in future books, and am thinking of baseball to keep from buying any more of them for now.

Must.control.credit.card. Hey, how 'bout them Cardinals?

Adventure and belly laughs!

Both the story and the narration is very good. The humor, by and large, is of the "immature male" sort, which sort of makes sense given "Atticus" (not his real name) made himself more or less immortal at the age of 21.

Conversations with his dog, Oberon, across their shared mind link, are of the "laugh out loud, snorting and crying because you're laughing so hard" sort.

That's not to say that he is always immature or behaves like an unthinking college student. There is commentary on everything from education to the medical, legal, and criminal justice systems, and the crimes against Native American people. There is also pop culture, movie lines, and Shakespeare. Oh. and a kick-ass mastery of multiple mythologies.

The story is fast paced, though not so fast paced as to disregard the chronicling of Atticus's philosophy and emotions. Definitely a must-read series. :)

More thoughtful

Any additional comments?

I found this book different than the first three. I found the danger level much lower. Much less chaos. He upped the thoughtfulness level. We spent more time learning about Atticus's past and what it is to be a Druid and most importantly, nearly immortal. Both the good and bad that go along with that. Interesting direction to go in, I thought.
