As a null, Scarlett Bernard possesses a rare ability to counteract the supernatural by instantly neutralizing spells and magical forces. For years she has used her gift to scrub crime scenes of any magical traces, helping the powerful paranormal communities of Los Angeles stay hidden. But after LAPD detective Jesse Cruz discovered Scarlett's secret, he made a bargain with her: solve a particularly grisly murder case, and he would stay silent about the city's unearthly underworld. So when two witches are found dead a few days before Christmas, Scarlett is once again strong-armed into assisting the investigation. She soon finds a connection between the murders and her former mentor, Olivia, a null who mysteriously turned into a vampire, who harbors her own sinister agenda. Now Scarlett must revisit her painful past to find Olivia - unless the blood-drenched present claims her life first.

This one was so exciting. Learned a lot about SCAR. Glad to see Jesse and Scar continue their getting to know one another. Glad Jessie's overdone accent from the last book was gone in this one. Narration was excellent. Listened twice before writing this review. Now going to the next book. So love this series. Thank you for the audible versions. I listen, then read-listen, then go back and listen. Enjoy.

Exciting!

I really love this story and this book was even better than the first. I have to be in the mood to read supernatural and this book really put me in that mood. Great story of witches, vampires, and werewolves that really kept me reading until the end. This series is a hidden gem that proves free can be really great reading. The narrator was perfect for this series and did great with the different characters. Can't wait to see where it goes.

I love Scarlett and her crew. Olivia, her mentor has been turned into a vampire and is after Scarlett. She tries to stop her from going after her friends and family.

Well written characters. I always get sucked in and want to spend more time with them.

Awesome read!

I could see this is a first book of a series--a few rough points but I must say I like the characters, the action and intrigue. Couldn't wait to read Book 2---I was very surprised at the book--REALLY WELL DONE. Again all of the above but those rough spots are now gone.

I had to get Book 3---SO HAPPY I DID--great flow of story line and new action to spice up the story. Great imagination---time well spend and I really have enjoyed the reading/ listening.

Now for your narrator--Amy McFadden--excellent choice--you are doing a great job!

One problem--WE NEED BOOK 4!

Thumbs up--Great Book Excellent series

What did you love best about Trail of Dead?

I loved the characters in this book. I was able to make some attachments to several of the characters.

What did you like best about this story?

The story had elements that I was not expecting in the characters. Especially the main characters ability. I have not read a paranormal book with this type of character.

What does Amy McFadden bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

You were able to feel the emotions that the main character was going through. I think that I would have not been able to really feel the way the character felt when she was trying to distance herself from certain situations without the emotion in the narrator's emotions.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did not laugh or cry during this book but I did have to hold my death and gasp a few times.

Any additional comments?

I was pleasantly surprised how much I loved this book. It was bought on a whim and really had no expectations on loving the book. It was well written and kept me interested in the story with no lagging sections. This author has quickly become an author that I will actively seek out her future books.

Pleasantly Surprised

Would you recommend Trail of Dead to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes. It contains a much better world definition than the first book and there is greater urgency to resolve the mystery.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The main character has too many TSTL moments in the story. Many of the things that she initially rejects out of hand later turn out to be either necessary for her survival or for resolving the mystery.

Much better than the first book

Oh my god, this is so good! This is one of the few books that my wife and I enjoy together. There are some wonderful twists and turns, as well as some real investigation from Jesse Cruz.

It gets better!

I knew some of the events of the future that happened due to having read the third trilogy first. Not by any fault of my own. I just wasn't aware that there were two other trilogies. And I'm glad that I found out before I begged the author for the back stories of things referenced in the third trilogy. I really enjoyed this book. I was still on my edge through the entire thing! I won't give specifics on certain things because I don't want to give the book away. All I'll say is that knowing how things end up doesn't mean that the events don't floor you! This is an AMAZING series! I would recommend reading them in order for full effect. I'm so in love with the characters in this series and just can't get enough. I really hope there's another trilogy set that I can read after I'm done with all of these!!!
