Publisher's summary

A multi-voice reading of this gripping Torchwood adventure - a prequel to Torchwood: Miracle Day.

Gwen and Rhys are on the run. Rhys was hoping this meant a windswept cottage on a cliff top, but he’s had to settle for a miserable caravan in the isolated village of Rawbone. With the locals taking an unhealthy interest in their daughter, Gwen and Rhys start to realise that something is very wrong.

As they uncover the village’s terrible past, Gwen discovers that Torchwood will never leave her behind, and now she and Rhys stand alone in defence of the Earth. And the children of Rawbone can only bring her closer to the secret forces that want her out of the way.

Clare Corbett, Kai Owen, Katherine Fenton, Joe Jameson, Carole Boyd, Michael Stevens and Susie Riddell are the readers of this thrilling multi-voice narration. Based on the hit series created by Russell T. Davies, First Born is a prequel to Torchwood: Miracle Day, starring John Barrowman and Eve Myles as Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper, with Kai Owen as Rhys Williams.

Great for fans!

If you aren't already a fan of the tv series or books you won't understand this novel. It continues were the series lets off and I thought it was great as the series left me asking "What happens next?" Captain Jack only appears in dreams but the story actually works without him. Gwen and Reece are parents and will do anything to protect there little girl. The enemies of Torchwood are still out there and so are aliens. I like this book as it makes one look at who the "bad" guys are and what it is to be human. With laugh out loud bits as well as scarey bits this book follows the classic Torchwood example and will be a treat for all fans. English sci-fi at its best.

Great plot!

True Torchwood 'grab and don't let go' story!! I like hearing the plot from each character's perspective and in their own voices. Helps to not miss the show so much 😊

Best Torchwood Book so far

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd recomment this book, yes, to anyone who enjoys science fiction whether or not they have seen Torchwood or Doctor Who

What was one of the most memorable moments of Torchwood: First Born?

My favorite moment is when Rhys is carrying baby Anwyn in the papoose. I love Rhys in general and that image stayed with me.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This set of characters could only be brought to life by these narrators. Kai Owen is amazing

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Gwyn and Rhys' conversations about their daughter are so honest and so hilarious, I laughed ever time.

Any additional comments?

If you only want to read one Torchwood book, chose Torchwood: First Born

Great to have more Torchwood!

Would you consider the audio edition of Torchwood: First Born to be better than the print version?

I am legally blind so I wouldn't read the print edition. But the audio edition is well produced and a great listen.

What other book might you compare Torchwood: First Born to and why?

Well there are plenty of other Torchwood titles. Which are similar by default. It did remind me of the x-Files or the Twilight Zone. And I think there is a Children of the Corn reference in this book.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Gwen gets her baby back from Jenny and tells Jenny what she thinks of her humanity. It was sad but hopeful.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Torchwood: First Born

Any additional comments?

I hope to see more Torchwood titles like First Born in the near future. They are a good mixture of sci-fi mystery horror and action.

Great Read!

What did you love best about Torchwood: First Born?

I really enjoyed the fact that the story was read by various narrators, each did a great job of telling the story and held my interest throughout the book. The story by James Goss was very well thought out and I felt connected to all of the characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love Rhy's because he is always fun and is very dependable and loyal to Gwen, he has adapted really well to each twist and turn of Gwen's journey with Torchwood.

Which scene was your favorite?

When the children made a stand and became more independent and less like stepford children, also when the locals and children were compensated for what had been done to them so in the end I was able to feel that justice had prevailed. I also thought Gwen and Rhy's reactions to becoming first time parents was very authentic and at times funny.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could easily listen to this story in one sitting and would actually remain seated in the car having arrived at work or home, not wanting to press the stop button and get out of the car as the story was so engaging.

Any additional comments?

I did not expect to enjoy the book as much as I did given that there is basically no Torchwood team and Captain Jack does not appear in the story that much, he does make a brief appearance when the story goes back in time to the history of the town but his character and involvement in this story is not very likeable.

A great story

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Kai Owen makes this story. He brings the story to life from Rhys' point of view. While the other voice actors hired to tell the story are all very good, the highlight of this story was Kai's parts.

Any additional comments?

If you're a Torchwood fan, this story helps to fill part of the gap between Children of Earth and Miracle Day. It picks up sequentially and helps you to imagine what life is like for Gwen and Rhys. As usual, sometimes Torchwood related events come back to haunt Gwen, and this story is no exception. The difference is that this time she has a husband and child mixed up and it has an affect on them all.

It's easily my favorite of the new stories to come out and a must listen to for any fan.
