Publisher's summary

The Terran Union is engaged in a vast interstellar war against the Krag Ruthless aliens intent on exterminating humankind. In 2315, the wily Max Robichaux is given command of the USS Cumberland, a destroyer with state-of-the-art capabilities but a combat record so bad, she’s known as the “Cumberland Gap.” Capt. Robichaux’s first mission: to take his warship to the Free Corridor, where the Krag have secretly been buying strategic materials, and to seize or destroy any ships carrying enemy cargo. Far from the fleet and under enforced radio silence, Max relies only on his determination and guile…and the support and friendship of his chief medical officer, the brilliant Dr. Sahin. Because even as he deals with the ship’s onboard problems and the stress of carrying out her risky assignment, Max and the doctor discover that the Cumberland and her misfit crew are all that stands in the way of a deadly Krag attack that threatens to end the war - and humanity - once and for all. A far-future story in the tradition of “ships of wood, men of iron” novels, To Honor You Call Us and the Man of War series combine the adventure of exploration, the excitement of war, and the dangers of the unknown through the eyes of a ship and her crew.

Very good on audible

Very good I had the audible book and thought that the telling and written went very well together.

To Honor You Call Us epitomizes everything I want in a book!

This is my favorite series in the "contemporary science fiction" section of the Audible library that I haunt almost daily. The characters have depth: human foibles, reaction to the demands of war, they show compassion, and as evidenced by the main two characters, no prejudice. Unlike other books I've listened to, there's very little coarse language and when it's used it's for emphasis not vulgarity. The plot is full of action and battle solutions found out of the box. Through out the book I witnessed the evolution of a crew demoralized by bad leadership evolve to confident, cohesive unit and I cheered each victory! But with complete honesty I can confess to reaching for the Kleenex for the tears the ending of the book brought. But that's not a bad thing! I'm already downloading the next book!

A Great Blend of Sci-fi and Military fiction

Ray Chase never missed a beat narrating a host of different characters. Hats off! To HONOR YOU CALL is a flying submarine of tactical moves done in four dimensional space/time. Honsinger has a good command of the science as well naval lexicon. You love hard military scifi then this book is for you.

Space opera

Any additional comments?

This book was fun to listen to. There were flaws in the plotting but it moved right along and as long as you are willing to overlook things like swords and boarding parties in space, it is a good listen. If you like the idea of Hornblower in space you will probably like this.

Good story, reader had his moments

I enjoyed the story. Someone said it right, part Master and Commander, part Star Trek.

I liked the reader for some of the non-main characters, but Max was too gruff for a young captain, the XO and Doctor sounded bored and forlorn all the time. And during descriptions and non-dialogue, the reader fell into a sort of sing-song cadence. It was very annoying. That is not to say that the reader didn't have his enjoyable moments. I especially liked his portrayals of the Admiral at the end. If I could give a 1/2 star his score would be 2 1/2.

I'll probably listen to the next one in the series. But I may have to take a break from the reader.

Psychology of Leadership

This book was really intriguing not for the story (which was rather predictable) but for the way the author characterized the psychology of a navy ship. There was a concern for the mind set and mental health of all characters which you don't see in most stories. It was very refreshing and rather striking.

If you like campy scifi......

....narrated by Captain Black Jack Sparrow you'll like this one. The voice/style is off-putting at first; I felt the writing would be better served by a less cartoonish read, but after a while it got entertaining by itself.

I suppose this is geared toward adolescents for whom this might be fun, but there are many references a 50-something year old will recognize - lots of things named after Apollo astronauts, Star Trek, 70's figures (Kasparov, Clouseau) and even a nod to Dancing With The Stars.

I made it almost all the way through, but what was entertaining became annoying and I left it with a few hours remaining. Narration style aside, the story and writing just aren't very good. I was hoping for more.

One of my favorites

I've listened to this audiobook many, many times. It's one of my favorites. It's a story about the bonds a man makes in the service, and being a war vet myself, it makes me think fondly of the men and women I served with, and the bonds we created that endure to this day.

Great Space Odyssey

I found this to be a well written Space Odyssey. I look forward to exploring this universe in future stories.
