Publisher's summary

The world has collapsed, and there are no heroes any more. His name is Three, a travelling gun for hire in a dying world. He has no allegiances, no family, no ties.

Against his better judgment, he accepts the mantle of protector to a sick woman on the run, and her young son. Together they set out across the plains in search of a mythic oasis, attempting to survive the forces that pursue them, and the creatures of the dark.

In these dark times, a hero may yet arise.

Post apocalyptic lone wolf takes woman & child

A "classic" story of tough lone-man who gives up his rough and tumble life to protect woman & child in trouble. It was a retelling of a western in a post apocalyptic world.

I was entertained through to the end. I didn't rush to read the second book, but I might read it sometime later.

All in all, I found it somewhat interesting, while it didn't impress me with its originality or plot.

So I'd put this in the "time filler" escapism category.

Fast-moving adventure in a cool future world!

I rolled the dice on this one, based on reviews--and I was definitely NOT disappointed!

In a dystopian future world where remnants of past technology still hang on, Three is a drifter, a scavenger, a hunter, an all-purpose badass. But he's also a little bored. Something's missing--and then, as he sits in a bar, drinking away his latest payoff, a woman and her son appear, begging him for help.

Their journey takes us through first-time author Jay Posey's intriguing futurescape: blasted cities, frontier villages, safehouse bunkers, all places to hide from the terrifying Weir who walk only at night. Some human badasses also stalk the trio, and the action keeps going from almost the very start as Three and his charges get into and out of one scrape after another.

Some of those scrapes are standard fare for a SF/apocalyptic novel, but the author kept the tension going through the characters themselves. Each has secrets that can make or break any situation they get into, so even when I was able to guess what might befall the travelers, I couldn't tell how things were going to shake out.

The world itself was pretty interesting, too, combining elements of a standard post-apocalyptic setting with a Gibson-esque cyberpunk tone. We never find out what happened to the world we know now, but that isn't a big deal, as the details of the future world stand in for a full-on explanation.

Luke Daniels narrates this competently, with an Eastwood-ish voice for the title character. Overall, exciting and very fun. Looking forward to the rest of this series!

A Fast-Paced Story in a Post-Apocalyptic World.

Three is set in a fast-paced, post-apocalyptic world with patchy human settlements scattered around hostile and unforgiving land. The amount of scientific and technological concepts and innovation is minimal but satisfying.

Remember that feeling when you hear things like "microfilm" and "magnetic tape" on an inter-galactic space ship in classic science fiction? I can imagine someone in the year 2113 reading this book and not be disappointed with the subtle technology Posey weaves into the story. He's a futurist.

Don't be discouraged by reviews which highlight the lack of background story. Author's gestalt approach allowed me to conceptualise my own version of the world rendering the book highly interactive, engaging and personal.

While this is not the very best book I've purchased on Audible, it's certainly the one that kept my attention right through to the end. So many times I literally couldn't go to sleep until I found out what happened next.

Fantastic - Fast Moving - Totally Engaged

Any additional comments?

Loved this book! Not my typical genre (End of Days / apocalypse).

Kinda like a western, where the tough lone man is the hero A hint of romances...

Kept me awake listing far too long!

VERY FAST MOVING AND ENTERTAINING.

Similar books (Fast Moving, interesting).
1) The Warded Man
2) Name of the Wind
3) The Way of Kings

Other books I like is
1) Eye of the World
2) George R.R. Martin Game of thrones
3) Power of One - Bryce Courtney ... Suck you in...

Cyberpunk, Post Apocalypse

SOMEWHERE BETWEEN A WHISPER AND A LOW GROWL
Reminiscent of William Gibson. The book starts with a bang. No time is wasted with info dumps or universe build up lectures. Posey proves he has the skills to put the reader in his totally different world without all that boring stuff. For the first couple of hours I was right there and was enjoying it. It was a fairly intense beginning.

THREE'S AVERISON TO WORDS
Hour 3 through 7, moves slowly. There is some action and some touchie feelie stuff. The majority of the story gets bogged down in too much detail and too much nothing. Three himself is kind of irritating. He never answers a question. He likes to be mysterious.

SHOOTING WAS RARELY A GOOD ANSWER TO A PROBLEM
Luke Daniels does a great job. I was irritated by the voice of Three and some of the side characters, but that was how they were written.

I quit around seven hours.

I like this book. Never boring.

If you could sum up Three in three words, what would they be?

Sad. Intriguing. Action.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, the end, nicely done.

Any additional comments?

This is obviously a post-apocalypse genre book. However the world is not entirely typical for the genre, besides the author manages to keep the world largely a mystery which I like, keeps you guessing and speculating. The story is largely a journey through a sort of urban wasteland where interesting dangers, friends and foes are met. I feel this is a major strength of the book, where some books set-up a typical good vs. evil scenario this book manages to feel like something that could have actually happened to real people. As such it is not a heroes journey even though the title suggest it.

New Epic Adventure - better than the description

This was a real surprise for me. I had never heard of this series before. I read the description because Luke Daniels narrates it (he is seriously that awesome). The premise sounded interesting and it was on-sale so I bought it. This book was WAY better than its description sounded. The writing was fantastic. The story line completely engaging. And the new world system well executed, although a bit mysterious (probably intentional). I felt for all the characters. I seriously teared up during some of the emotional parts. I want to get the next one.

WOW! Can't read to read Jay Posey's next novel!

If you could sum up Three in three words, what would they be?

Really
Freaking
Goood

What other book might you compare Three to and why?

The main character reminded me a bit of Roland from Stephen King's Gunslinger series.

What about Luke Daniels’s performance did you like?

The narrator was really good.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes... I inhaled this book. It was so good I didn't want to stop reading. After the book was done I had that sort of sad feeling that comes when I finish a 5-star book.
I will definitely be reading this one again.

Better than expected! Three's a bad ass!

What made the experience of listening to Three the most enjoyable?

What made the experience most enjoyable, well, I guess it would have to the story arc. I like the whole post-apocalyptic/sy-fy genre and this one was pretty damn good with well built characters that kept me engaged in the book. I'm fairly new to audio books(or printed books for that matter) but I've learned to judge character development on whether or not I care what happens to the people in the novel. If you don't care about the characters you'll probably find yourself hitting the rewind button a lot. That's what happens to me anyway. I didn't hit the rewind button too many times while listening to this book which means I was paying attention to the story. That's hard for me to do with my short attention span.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Three?

I'm sorry guys, I cannot answer that without giving away a huge spoiler so I'll just say my most memorable moment was towards the end. Honestly, I try not to read this section of the reviews because it gives away part of the story.

What does Luke Daniels bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I guess he brings emotion and passion to the story that I wouldn't get if I just read it. I enjoy books more when they're read to me

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, towards the end. Again, I won't answer this question because I believe it's a spoiler.

Any additional comments?

Ya, it's an original take on a genre that a lot of writer's have, well, failed to pull off but Jay Posey had the foresight to try something a little different. good job Jay! For $9.97 it's a good deal! Check it out.
