Publisher's summary

Fans of the Shannara epic will revel as the forces of good battle an evil book, the Ildatch, which sends the Mord Wraiths to destroy mankind. To overcome this dark force, the Druid Allanon needs Brin Ohmsford, for she holds the power of the wishsong, a magic invoked by singing that can make plants bloom instantly or turn trees from green to autumn gold.

As Brin reluctantly joins Allanon on his dangerous journey, a prophecy foretells an evil plan to trap the unsuspecting Brin into a fate more horrible than death. But she has the help of her brother, Jair, and the protection of Rone Leah, who takes his job very seriously, as the comic rustics, Weapons Master Garet Jax and Slanter the gnome, leaven the fantasy.

great ending to a trilogy

I strongly suggest reading the first two books first, but this one was definitely the best of the three. the character archs of each character left me well satisfied. there also was a vague enough ending to leave it open for another book, or series (wink wink).

Love

Another great book in the series. Scott Brick does another great job narrating all of the characters in the book.

Solid Installment in Solid Series

What made the experience of listening to The Wishsong of Shannara the most enjoyable?

As the novel progresses, the pacing gets pretty great. Events in the story make the stakes clear. Terry Brooks has a way of making the odds seem incredibly dire, and while it's not quite as effective as in Elfstones, Brooks' talents are still on display here. There's a unique style to Brooks' writing, a sort of throwback to yesteryear that has the ability to just hit the spot for me.

What other book might you compare The Wishsong of Shannara to and why?

The Lord of the Rings. They both are fantasies revolving around desperate quests to destroy a powerful object. The differences are in the style and details, and there are enough to make Wishsong a worthwhile read in its own right.

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

There's something about hearing a fantasy story read out loud that takes me back to my childhood. Scott Brick knows when to give magical elements the proper dramatic weight, and there's a good cadence to his reading.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nothing that extreme, but it had me listening intently during the tense climax, and there moments of genuine emotion.

Any additional comments?

Scott Brick has a weird way of pronouncing "Shannara." Thankfully, outside of the title, the word isn't used all that much. Also, Audible seems to be missing some of the books in this series, and it would be nice to see the full set, particularly the Heritage sub-series.

A Fitting Sendoff

As with the other two books in this trilogy, the story is self-contained and alludes to previous events and characters. I found this story to be more enjoyable than the second one and just a tad bit less entertaining than the first. The characters were very well developed and varied. I loved the interactions between them and the building relationships throughout.

The action was top notch in this one and the last 2 hours was a roller coaster of a ride. The lore building was well balanced and continued to add new details to the world. I really enjoy that after 70 something hours invested in this trilogy there was always something or someone knew that I was learning about.

Scott Brick does a fantastic job, as always and he has climbed into my list of favorite narrators. He reads at a pace that goes at just the right speed and his voices, while subtle at times at depth to narration.

All in all I greatly enjoy Terry Brooks and the way that he tells and builds a story. I will continue to listen to his works and continue this journey through the world of Shannara.

Some, if not, the best series of Terry's

I couldn't count the times I've read this book, and the other two that go with it, I never get tired of revisiting and getting caught up in their lives and world.

Years in the Reading

It took me a couple times trying to reread this
series (life got in the way several times). But
after four times of rereading this (only made it
half way on the first book each time), I finally
finished this amazing story. It holds a special
place for me and I recommend it to anyone
looking for adventure, romance, and fantasy.
