Day two: the wise man’s fear

“There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.”

My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me.

So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

Not just another day: listen to more in the Kingkiller Chronicles.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Nick Podehl arrives at the end of this long audiobook, the second in the Kingkiller series, as engaged and fresh as he was at the start.... Podehl adeptly presents the broad cast of characters - from moneylenders and courtesans to kings. One of the most fascinating portrayals by Podehl begins with a young mercenary from the Adem who says little. And when he does speak, he has a flat voice, mostly devoid of expression. Podehl builds on this when Kvothe returns with him to study among the Adem, where the mercenary develops a recognizable pattern of speech reflecting many of the culture's characteristics." “The best epic fantasy I read last year.... He’s bloody good, this Rothfuss guy.”
(George R. R. Martin, New York Times-bestselling author of A Song of Ice and Fire)

“Rothfuss has real talent, and his tale of Kvothe is deep and intricate and wondrous.” (Terry Brooks, New York Times-bestselling author of Shannara)

"It is a rare and great pleasure to find a fantasist writing...with true music in the words." (Ursula K. Le Guin, award-winning author of Earthsea)

To love or to Hate you will do both.

Frustrated enough to want to throw the book away but intrigued enough to drudge through.

The second book in the series adds laughter and brings smiles but the author jumps into a new verse, a new new storyline without a though of how to end the current one.

I have been so frustrated that have had to put this aside. And now I have to write this not knowing if I can finish. I likely will.

The book appears to be written with thoughts or ideas or maybe assembled from several short stories and then mashed together with little though or reason. The book reads like a jigsaw puzzle forced almost correctly but not quite.

I understand why I see this series on the list of top fantasy but I don't get if this is a love story or a fantasy.

Overall I'm frustrated that the story has no real plot line and jumps to sections. At one section of the book the storyline states this is not to important to describe so here's the what came out in the end.

Frustrating that the book goes into excessive details on a topic but when it drags on a bit BOOM you head into another plot.

These multiple plots mostly are interesting and I know where the story is suppose to be heading but it seams like the scenic route that is sometimes interesting and other times a gravel road.

Long but good!

Enjoyed the story. Can't wait for the next book! Love the reader. Don't give up on the slow start. It picks up after the screen is set. It just a wide story line. :)

Great Book

Hard to explain how this book is different from other fantasy books I've read, but it truly is. The writing is simple and straightforward, not too flowery and overly descriptive and yet it very well written. You care about the characters and it keeps you hooked all the way through the book. I hope there is more to come. FYI, the first book was amazing as well. The friends from the university are all very likeable. I think it would be cool to see some spinoff stories involving them. Very happy that someone suggested I try this series of books.

Love it!

This story will take over your life. Your house will be a mess, your children hungry and your husband ignored. Reality will not exist until you are done. And even the you will morn it, miss it for days. Never has a book had this effect on me.

A great journey

The only problem with a story this good is the agony awaiting the next book.

Amazing can't wait for the next book!

I have to admit when I started the first book, The Name of the Wind, on audiobook I hated the narrator at first. I had read both books previously and just wanted to experience them again and thought listening would be better than rereading. BUT Boy has he grown on me. His performance is perfect and his voices for other character and other languages bring the book to life. I know they're making TV shows and movies and games and whatever else, but I think the audiobooks are enough!
