Publisher's summary

Dissolute nobles, master spies, and the unlikeliest of heroes, Alec and Seregil have survived exile, treachery, and black magic. But the road that lies ahead is the most hazardous theyve ever traveled. For with enemies on all sides, they must walk a narrow path between good and evil where one misstep might be their last.

Having escaped death and slavery in Plenimar, Alec and Seregil want nothing more than to go back to their nightrunning life in Rhminee. Instead they find themselves saddled with Sebrahn, a strange, alchemically created creaturethe prophesied child of no woman. Its moon-white skin and frightening powers make Sebrahn a danger to all whom Alec and Seregil come into contact with, leaving them no choice but to learn more about Sebrahns true nature. With the help of trusted friends and Seregils clan, the duo set out to discover the truth about this living homunculusa journey that can lead only to danger or death. For Seregils old nemesis Ulan Sathil of Virsse and Alecs own long-lost kin are after them, intent on possessing both Alec and Sebrahn. On the run and hunted, Alec and his comrades must fight against time to accomplish their most personal mission ever.

A Note From Author Lynn Flewelling

Dear Listeners,

It's been brought to my attention that there is some confusion over the noticeable difference in some of the pronunciations between the first three books of this series, and the last two. The reason for this is quite simple. For Shadows Return and The White Road, I had the pleasure of talking in considerable detail with narrator Adam Danoff. So the differences from the first three books may be a bit jarring at first, but what you will hear in Shadows Return and The White Road are the proper pronunciations of names and things, as the author intended. I'm delighted with these new interpretations, and I hope you will be, too. Happy listening!

a road that shouldn't have been traveled

I absolutely loved books one, two, and three. Book 4 was..ok. Better then nothing but not as good as the first trio.
Book 5, lets be nice and put it this way: if you liked 4 you should like this one. If you thought 4 was a let down, you will hate this one.
Nightrunner, to me, implies the trade and action of the first 3 books.. these last two volumes almost seem completely disconnected with the ideas and premise of the former books. While the characters have the same name and history, they act as if they were different people. The book goes into more a bad moral story then the high adventure that got me into the books in the first place... The main plot was around the thing begot in #4 that I couldn't have cared less about. To be honest, there was nothing that made me care anything and anyone in the book.
Listen to a sample before spending a credit. I wish I had.

I enjoy Flewelling

Any additional comments?

This is the fifth book in the series, and I found it pretty good. The first 4 were exceptional.I found this story not as good as the others, but it did bring one part of the adventure to a conclusion. I am looking forward to the Sixth book, hoping that it will give more adventure like that in the first three books.

Great Story

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book, it almost would stand alone, but I enjoyed the whole series and recommend it.

Off the path a bit

I think that this book drifts a bit away from the formula that makes the others of the Nightrunner Series so much fun to read. Our heroes are somewhat out of the environment that I am used to them being in, so it wasn't as much fun for me, however as always, well written. I'm looking forward to Casket of Souls being released...

ups

I completely agree with Linda. The first 3 books were great - this is, let's say, disappointing...
No intrique, disconected episodes, no political and history background.

The weakest in the series -

Would you listen to The White Road again? Why?

No, it lacks depth and the only interesting parts are brushed over.

What did you like best about this story?

So there is a new type of magic in town surly that should be developed as a central part of the story, it is not. Instead we have pages upon pages of simpering romance novel dialog.hmm I guess if that was the best thing I have to say about the book I should really drop its rating to a two.As with the other novels read by this narrator - he makes the main characters juvenile and whinny.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Adam Danoff and Lynn Flewelling ?

I would not like to listen to the narrator again. If Ms. Flewelling can find her way out of the romance style and back to a SciFi style with solid characters and a well developed plot, I would read another book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

absolutely not - I had to shut it off and tell people how bad it was at times.

Another great addition to the series!

I adore this series & enjoyed where this story took me! I was glad to see it continued nicely from where the last book left off and had a very satisfying conclusion! I do wish we’d learned more about Alecs’ father and some of the mysteries surrounding him… but there’s two more books worth of things to discover!

This was a much better follow up

The plot Ark. Was settled to a satisfactory conclusion. The characters felt more at ease with prior books in the series to their natures. The over all the fall aji also seems to lineup better. I'm hoping that Alex child will be seen again in a future book as he remains an interesting character inspiration

One word: Pointless

These last two books are just...weird. They distinctly dont resemble the first 3 books in the series, all of which were fantastic. Most of the things that people have come to expect are just gone: the intrigue, the suspense, the clever machinations, the character development, the banter, the twists, the detective work...all of it is missing in exchange for this nasty male pregnancy fantasy (a trope thats quite common...in FANFICTION). Now that this dull, needless arc is over, im still convinced that Lyn Fleweling did not write this, that she was held hostage by some superfan who REALLY wanted Seregil and Alec to have a magical child together...while writing nonstop about bodily fluids, because of course. Whoever this person is must also be a huge fan of Twilight, particularly the last book where Edward and Bella have a similar stint in monster child rearing. This is the only scenario that makes sense to me.

Even if you disregard all that, mechanically and stylistically these two books are just bad. They truly read like filler in a long running TV show. Everything with Sebrahn is just awful, from the entire book detailing his ghastly conception to the almost vampiric hold he has on our characters (literally vampiric, as he consumes blood). You’d think with all that we’ve been through with this abomination there would be some sort of payoff. Theres not. Sebrahn leaves the story as abruptly as he entered it. By the end he’s still very much a “thing” and never shows any real affection for Alec, which is disgusting considering all the suffering he’s caused, on the characters and the readers. Though its not just him, no one really develops at all. Despite the appearance of the Hazadriel fey Alec learns nothing of significance about his past, and the Hazad are as vile and unlikable in the end as they were in the beginning. Rizer (sp?) could have died for all I cared. Seregil similarly gets no real closure as well. Ilar, the supposed source of all his angst, merely appears for a few chapters and vanishes completely. Ullan E’Sathil turns out to be a mastermind that orchestrated nearly all of Seregil’s misfortunes, but he dies with nary a whimper. Seregil’s name is never cleared, and life goes on as if he never even met Ilar. Its so frustrating how these two books dangled these longstanding mysteries in front of us, only to barely confront or answer them, focusing instead on garbage like Sebrahn. I honestly would have been happier if Ilar was never introduced, remaining as the mysterious Moriarty-like figure that I had in my head for the first 3 books, rather than the pathetic creature he turned out to be. Seregil would have been better off too.

Judging from the synopses of the next book, which (FINALLY!) puts the story back in Riminy and the feud between the princesses, I think I can say with almost complete confidence that you can cut these two books out completely and nothing would have been lost.

As if the books themselves werent bad enough, the narrator had to take a drop in quality as well. This guy is still terrible. Not only does he have no respect for how the original narrator pronounced everything, he couldnt even maintain his own consistency. Is it CAR-ee or Carrey? Please pick one and stick to it! And everytime he says “Bellary’s balls” STILL makes me cringe.

Im so relieved this gross saga is finally over and everyone can be themselves again. Just Wish the same was true for the narrator...

The narrator may have gotten better in this book.

The audiobook narrator may have gotten better in this book, but I may also be becoming resigned to his voice since I love the series so much.
