Publisher's summary

A timeless epic of the dawn of civilization.

In The Valley of Horses, Ayla, the unforgettable heroine of The Clan of the Cave Bear, sets out on her own odyssey of discovery away from the nurturing adoptive family and friends of the Clan. She is in search of others like herself and in search of love.

Sharing a hidden valley with a herd of steppe horses, Ayla finds a unique friendship with animals as vulnerable as herself and ingeniously discovers the complex skills needed to survive - skills no Clan member was ever able to master.

But none of her experiences prepares her for the emotional turmoil she feels when she rescues a young man - the first of the Others she has seen - from almost certain death.

Torn between her desire for human companionship and her fear of the unknown Others, she struggles against her deep attraction to the handsome Jondalar. It is Jondalar who teaches her the meaning of true friendship and love.

Creation of knowledge

Oh, I set the playback speed to .7

this is my fourth time through all the books.

The creation of knowledge. Descriptions of how discoveries happen. Brings it alive. Also the amazing amount of knowledge about the history of early humans and of geology and. anthropology, human emotions, medicine .. spirit …
This is the best book I know for a man to understand women. as a social worker that’s saying a lot.

Much better than the first book

This book continues Ayala's story and introduces Jondolar. It is a great story and this is much less like a text book than the first book. I really enjoyed it, and it guaranteed I would continue with the series.

Sex takes over

Would you listen to The Valley of Horses again? Why?

Too bad ... I love everything about this book EXCEPT that it devolves into a "Romance novel" Some of that would have been okay, and work ... However, by the time I got to the end of this book, I was SO sick of hearing about her lovers "MANHOOD" that I didn't even finish it ... Ruined the book for me. So, my suggestion is to listen to the first one, (CAVE BEAR) and "maybe" this one also ... but unless you enjoy the sex and romance aspect, don't bother to go on with the series. A shame, really.

Story

I love the first book but when Jondalar was introduced I didn’t like him. He is boring and all he is there for is “pleasures”. He is kind of stupid!

Among the most delightful tales of resilience and perseverance!

Jean M. Auel is a brilliant scholar as well as a master craftsman writer. Her assiduous reseaech, which included not only travel and intensive study, but also experience based survival techniques, made possible her characters, to navigate their ancient landscapes. Although I have listened to each of the six books in Auel's Earth Children series innumerable times, I invariably glean new insights as well as abundant joy through each "read".

The best one

Probably my favorite of the series! Listening to it as an audiobook made it feel new and fresh, even though I've read it many times before!
