Publisher's summary

Young noble Luthien Bedwyr is too privileged to understand that his once-proud land, Eriador, suffers under the demonic oppression of Wizard-King Greensparrow. That is, until the day Luthien seeks justice for a friend's murder---only to become a fugitive fleeing the king's monstrous cyclopian soldiers. Befriended by the irrepressible "highwayhalfling" Oliver deBurrows, and enlisted by an ancient, mysterious mage, Luthien's exile will become an enchanted quest to steal a mystic prize from a dragon's hoard.

Suddenly, Eriador's enslaved humans, elves, and dwarfs begin to rally around rumored tales of a freedom fighter who strikes Greensparrow's foul minions...an unknown hero who wields a legendary sword and magic cape...a warrior who is invisible but who casts the "Crimson Shadow."

Critic reviews

“Salvatore describes and choreographs battle scenes better than any other contemporary fantasist, as this first tale of the adventures of Luthien Bedwyr amply demonstrates.” ( Publishers Weekly)

Entertaining, funny , a little predictable

A good story. I enjoyed it. I really liked the highwAyman character. He made me laugh. The rest was a little predictable. I definately enjoyed it. Its a good inbetween book... I finished some AWSOME epics, couldnt find any new ones, so I read this one. Short and entertaining. Like a good tv episode. Just not earth shattering.

Dashing story with a striking narrator!

Another great tale written by Salvatore! David Drummond provides a memorable narration to the story and brings out the full character for Oliver DeBurrows!

up and down

Well I was coming off the heals of Driizt's first trilogy so my expectations were high. I wanted to get into this one but I just couldnt get into the main character. His sidekick was cool, but the story had trouble holding me. There were moments I listened intently and moments I zombied through. Still, it ended on a high note and I'm planning on the sequel.

Great but not the best of R.A. Salvatore

R.A. Salvatore has set a very high standard for his books while I very much enjoyed this book I did not find myself obsessing over it as I usually do I feel it was shorter and therefor lacking in the character development the love interest while usually very developed was pretty 2d

This book got better with every chapter.

I stumbled across this book by accident. I was familiar with the author, but not the story. For a short book, it was full of unexpected turns, and great characters. I look forward to continuing this trilogy.

In the end a great story.

Overall, the beginning was lackluster as far as the Ra salvatore story goes. But in the end, it was a phenomenal story. In the end of reflection, it feels like a very earlier work which it was.
