Hi-fi sci-fi: explore our full list of Robert A. Heinlein titles.
©1954 Robert A. Heinlein; (P)2007 Full Cast Audio
I first read this 30 years ago and I loved the twist (the only thing I remembered). Having found it again, I enjoyed it just as much in audio. David Baker and the Full Cast Family do an excellent job of bringing Heinlein's books to life.
The cast enlarged the characters. It was a great listen. Heinlein wrote wonderful dialogue. A lesson of ethics and morals from RAH at his best!
I'd like to hear much more from this audio producer. Enjoy the 'radio-play' style.
The Star Beast is one of Heinlein's stories for youths with teenage main characters. The story unfolds almost as a mystery with the star beast as an unknown species extra-terrestrial. The main human character (John Thomas) believes he is raising Lummox as a pet. Little does he know the funny and surprising truth. Full cast audio productions add extra life to any story by having a wide variety of voices for the characters rather than a typical single narrator. The voices of the various characters are well matched. My favorite youth Heinlein is "The Rolling Stones". I also love "Have Spacesuit Will Travel" which are both also done by "Full Cast". I recommend all 3 books for young readers and all Heinlein fans.
While not one of Heinleins classics, my 11-year-old son and I spent an enjoyable roadtrip listening to The Star Beast. It is fairly predictable for an adult but he enjoyed it to the end.
This was done by the same company that conducted "The Rolling Stones" and "Have Spacesuit Will Travel". I generally just like to have the books read by one performer, but I will take Heinlein anyway that I can get him. That being said, if you listened to the aforementioned audio-performances, and if you enjoyed them; then it is likely that you will enjoy this one as well. There is a sense of nostalgia and wonderment that go along with these excellent science fiction books written in the 1950's, originally targeted at younger audiences. This is reason enough for me to enjoy them. But this is a good story with a bit of suspense, and a slightly twisted plot. All in all it is a good experience.
This may have been written for YAs but I enjoyed it 55 years after reading it. And so did my husband. He could hardly wait to go somewhere, anywhere just to hear more. He loved the idea of raising "John Thomas'".First class story...what fun!!!! Looking forward to more like it,,,maybe the Bloody Jack series.
This is the tale of a boy and his pet. or is it a gal and her pet.
A fun story, though definitely a youth story. Still a fun story to which to listen.
This full cast production has the advantage of having a full cast. This makes it easier to listen to it. The cast does a fine job with the reading.
What more can you say? Nothing deep here, but certainly a fun read and a good romp. Heinlein has always entertained and certainly does that here as well. I really enjoyed the full cast reading - I am going to look for more of their stuff!
Star Beast is a great story and I thought well of the performance the voice actors gave it. If you're a fan of Heinlein, you'll recognize the '50s dialog style for what it is, a result of RAH's morality play and the time period when the original book was published. To new, young ears it might sound a bit stilted and "old fashioned" in a sci-fi context. I think the performers captured that '50s style well.
Overall the book is a great listen, as are most of RAH's books.
Revelation of who the Star Beast actually was.
I'm sure many of the cast did more than one character. They were just excellent. Very talented.
No I made it last. Listened on my way in to work every day.
Do more Heinlein, David Baker and Full Cast
"Heinlein at his best"
As always Heinlein draws you in, this is one of his 'younger audience' books but very enjoyable and I recommend it to ALL Heinlein fans!
"A great listen"
If you like the early Heinlein style, this one is a cracking listen. It reminded me of the inventiveness of 'Have Spacesuit Will Travel' and repeatedly surprised me with poignant observations of human value based behaviour. It is excellently voiced and narrated; I loved it.
