Publisher's summary

When fifteen-year-old Jacob Lau is pulled from the crumpled remains of his mother's car, no one can explain why he was driving or why the police can't find his mother's body. Made a ward of his uncle and thousands of miles from home, a beautiful and mysterious neighbor, Dr. Abigail Silva, offers to use her unique abilities to help him find his mom. In exchange, she requires Jacob to train as a Soulkeeper, a gifted warrior charged with protecting human souls. He agrees to her demands, desperate for any clue to the mystery of his mother's disappearance. But soon Jacob finds himself trapped in a web of half-truths, and questions Dr. Silva's motives for helping him.

Great narration, not really my type of story

Such an interesting read. Not your typical YA, this has many religious elements to the story. It does have the Urban Fantasy feel with Christian undertones.

The story moves rather slowly at times. It is almost all from Jacob's POV, with a couple snippets of others. It keeps the reader in the dark about what others are thinking or their motivations. Many times the supporting characters do not give enough hints into what they think and feel.

The romance is light, this is definitely a more male oriented YA read. Not really flowery or girly. There are also plenty of battle type scenes. It is definitely about the battle between good and evil.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Jeffrey Kafer, is wonderful! He has a great deep voice that carries you through the story. He is one of the reasons I stuck with the story, even after it was clear it wasn't exactly to my taste. I loved his read and would really like to try something that is in my wheel house. His pace was terrific and he had an engaging energy in the read.

Overall, this wasn't a read for me, but I can see many audiences it would appeal to, very much. It is more of a Christian YA theme more geared to male readers.

So you liked Harry Potter? Give this a shot.

If you could sum up The Soulkeepers in three words, what would they be?

I would burn one of my words on signifying the age level for this book. My next would be used to classify it and my last word would explain my enjoyment. Teenager, supernatural, captivating.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Besides the obvious main character I really liked Abigail. Her beauty, wisdom, and mystery was very intriguing.

What about Jeffrey Kafer’s performance did you like?

Kafer was able to make his voice sound like and match what I thought each character should feel like. He really hit the mark in my opinion.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are several scenes throughout the book that made me empathize with Mr. Lau and invoked such emotion as anger, vindication, or relief. I never shed a tear nor did I laugh out loud.

Any additional comments?

All in all I enjoyed this book and may even check out the next one.

It's Incredible !!!

Any additional comments?

It is incredibly easy to get swept up into it. I found myself desperately want to know more about this new, exciting and terrifying world that Jacob is thrust into. It is one of the most well-developed plots I've seen in a long tim Ching does an incredible job crafting the different story elements so that they fit . Often times with series, the first book is basically just glorified world-building. While the author does put a great deal of time and effort into this, the story does actually move along at a decent pace. I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook.

Just the sci-fi I was looking for...Excellent story

Hard to put down once you get started. I do like the sci-fi stories with an underlying overall higher good. i listened to it on my tablet, which I have come to enjoy. Many times, I would have preferred for the narrator to speak slower and with more inflection in his voice like the narrator in the David Baldacci books...and I would like a woman's voice for all the women in the story. I would recommend this book and I look forward to the rest of the series.

pretty good

I wasn't sure where this book was heard, it had a pretty good story behind it. It did have some language in it and some things mentioned that I could have gone without. I would have enjoyed the book so much more without those things.

Strange to me.

It took a bit for me to get into this book. I am not sure why though. I love the story line and the characters and such. After a while, I got into it and couldn't put it down. I wonder if maybe it was due to the narrator being a male. I had never listened to a male narrator before now and it was odd. It certainly changes the way you here things. Strange... He did a great job though! Loved it!!

Creative story telling at it's best...

Normally I'd not finish an audio book in a single sitting, unless it's very good. This one has a great storyline, strong characters, and some what surprising twists. I particularly enjoyed the coming of age love affair between the protagonists, full of innocents and probing the others personality. I couldn't put it down....
