Publisher's summary

Moon, once a solitary wanderer, has become consort to Jade, sister queen of the Indigo Cloud court. Together, they travel with their people on a pair of flying ships in hopes of finding a new home for their colony. Moon finally feels like he’s found a tribe where he belongs. But when the travelers reach the ancestral home of Indigo Cloud, shrouded within the trunk of a mountain-sized tree, they discover a blight infecting its core. Nearby they find the remains of the invaders who may be responsible, as well as evidence of a devastating theft. This discovery sends Moon and the hunters of Indigo Cloud on a quest for the heartstone of the tree - a quest that will lead them far away, across the Serpent Sea.

In this followup to The Cloud Roads, Martha Wells returns with a world-spanning odyssey, a mystery that only provokes more questions and the adventure of a lifetime.

Want More !

As Moon helps his new found friends search for a very important piece of their heritage, Moon faces internal as well as external issues in his personal values with all the new peoples he meets. Wish this weren't the end as it seems, such a good story !

A World devoid Humans

An exotic world forms the backdrop for continuing a fantastic adventure by Martha Wells. This is book 2 of an outstanding SCIFI/Fantasy Series. You really need to read/listen to the first book, The Cloud Roads before starting this one. If you enjoyed the first, you will not be disappointed here. Moon, the stories hero continues to learn about his people and their customs, as he sets out on a quest to save their new home.

Just as in the first book, the world continues to introduce imaginative landscapes, characters and races, the likes of which I have not seen in other works. The narration is again excellent, and the second book in the series was not a letdown. I am on to the third book now, but already know I will be disappointed to see the story end. I hope the author considers exploring this world further.

What a Journey!

This was a captivating sequel to Cloud Roads. Clever character development, engaging action segments, and innovative plot development. Thank you, Martha, for seeing the Three Worlds and their inhabitants SO clearly. Having grown up outside the Reaches, Moon has none of the stereotypes and clutch traditions of the others of his species and it is his “feral solitary” thinking that keeps saving their Court! This is my new favorite series. I’ve already purchased Book 3 so there’s no delay to immerse myself in Moon and Jade’s world!!

Not as good as the first one

The world building is excellent and I love the unique creatures in the world

In the first book the courts were set up as a matriarchy with all the sexes having a defined place within the court and consort had a place there they were bigger and stronger than the Warriors and fall along beside them that’s exactly how they portrayed Stone and moons place in the court

In the second book they did some kind of gender swap and suddenly consorts Sport little sheltered princesses that waited around for a big strong queen to come in breed with them and then put them back in their ivory tower it was stupid I think the author did it just to set up some kind of persecution complex with the main character

So for me after they met the other court thing started to go downhill from there and a slight spoiler alert I bought the second and third book at the same time and for me the story continued to go downhill and third book

In the last chapter of the book was just stupid to serve no other purpose than to emasculate the main character and it didn’t even Further the plot line at all

I just love this series!

The first book is probably my favorite so far, but this sequel was just incredible! The most interesting fantasy world I’ve ever read, complex and likable characters, plots that are refreshing and clean! I fell in love with Moon over the first book and watching the series and his life progress is one of my favorite past times. Also the narrator is fantastic!

My only critiques for the story (and these are the most minor things in the worl) are
1. There was this odd thing throughout the series that continues into the second book where the characters often remark that they can never seem to catch a break. While we the readers know this, it’s a bit jarring for the characters to say so in the confines of the story.
2. Give me more chime! He is my favorite character and just doesn’t get enough page space.

That being said, this series as defiantly become one of my favorites!!! Read it!!!

Edit there is a typo in my review that the website will not let me fix, sorry!

Even better the second listen.

As stated... I am re-listening to the entire series. I am enjoying it even more the second time around.
