Publisher's summary

Nothing has gone according to plan.

To Captain Lee Harden, Project Hometown feels like a distant dream and the completion of his mission seems unattainable. Wounded and weaponless, he has stumbled upon a group of survivors that seems willing to help. But a tragedy in the group causes a deep rift to come to light and forces him into action. In the chaos of the world outside, Lee is pursued by a new threat: someone who will stop at nothing to get what he has.

The Remaining: Aftermath is the second book in the best-selling The Remaining series.

Even better than the first!

Oh wow! I thought the first book was good and worthy of 5-stars. This one was even better and blew me away! I’m almost reluctant to read the 3rd book in case this series becomes a disappointment, but no, I’m too hooked to give up now. Great storytelling and character development. The author isn’t afraid to put characters in tough situations and then making them even tougher once you think things are letting up. Some good twists and turns. There were a few places I got slightly confused, but overall, I never got bored and looked forward to reading the next bit. Definitely my cup of tea and a good break from the more daunting books I've been working on.

Christian Rummel is spot on with the character voices and adds just the right amount of tension to scenes. Never overdramatic nor boring. Couldn't think of a better narrator to do this series.

Almost

First, I almost gave up on the series after book one. A little too slow and took too long to develop the characters but by book 2 you understand why....Months passed and I got book 2. Now I am hooked.

More of the First and Getting Better

If you have not read the first book in the series you should definitely do that. These books do not stand on their own. The author does very little to recap the first book so the reader knows what is going on. Read The Remaining first or you will not appreciate the story nearly as much.

That said, this book just takes up where the first one left off and continues the saga with an entirely new set of twists and turns. Some new characters are introduced and new side quests from the main mission are introduced as well. All good stuff.

I am actually reading the fourth book as I write this review and it just keeps getting better. The narrative changes from first person a bit more in this book and even more so as the story progresses – for reasons I can’t mention here.

All I can say is this is a great series of books, so start at the beginning and you will not be disappointed.

Loved it

Beautiful narration, at times I wondered how the narrator kept up with so many different voices at once so very smoothly. Can't wait to see what book three brings, seems these survivors can't catch a break.

The Story Continues

DJ has taken the post-apocalyptic genre on a different, yet familiar journey. He has woven the collapse of our society with the familiar hero figure, the maniac mindless hordes, the growing daily struggle to survive and the growing list of antagonist figures. Interesting story that keeps the listener going and, at times, wondering what is next for our champion.

awesome follow-up! couldn't stop listening!

Where does The Remaining: Aftermath rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

so far, the first two books rank really high on my favorite end of the world / zombie stories. this series is definitely in my top 5.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Remaining: Aftermath?

whew! there were a few! but i can't say b/c it'd spoil other listener's experience.

Any additional comments?

this is an excellent follow-up! no sophomore slump at all!

as the story opens, lee has to prove he is what he says he is- someone who truly wants to help. lee and those volunteering to help him must find some gas so they can make it to one of his bunker. i like how nothing comes easy. once again, i must mention pacing and storytelling. most authors in zombie stories brush off the act of getting gas but not d.j. mollies! he believably and realistically builds tension around the act of looking for cars with gas and siphoning it. you can feel the tension and nervousness the characters feel. i mean i felt myself being really quiet while listening to that part. i would like to thank the editor for helping d.j. know just how much time and description should be spent on the different parts of the story.

as the story progresses, we learn more about milo, and he truly is a vile psychopath. lee and milo are heading into a confrontation, but will lee's mission outweigh his feelings for milo? book 2 further develops some of the characters at camp ryder and introduces new characters. i liked the supporting characters.you know the author does a good job when you actually loathe some of the characters he introduces you to.

i must say most end of the world / zombie have a crazy christian pastor, who is usually an over the top cartoony caricature, but d.j. mollies does it correctly- a man who knows just what to say and when, not preachy at all. realistic while holding an m-4. lol

once again, the pacing of the story is superb! so far, these first two books have some of the best pacing i've listened to, and to be honest, i think that's one of the reasons why these two books have shot up my list of all time favorite end of the world / zombie stories.

talking about zombies, i really like the direction the author is taking. for once, the infected really are something to fear even with machine guns.

there is a shocking moment in this story, and i had to rewind b/c i was like what the heck just happened.

i was extremely satisfied with how this book closed, albeit a little sad, and i am looking forward to see how things progress in the 3rd book.

Almost non stop great action

Lee has to prove himself to the survivors and goes to try to recover supplies from his bunker which results in many, many twists, turns and surprises, which never seem to end. There is a tremendous amount of action but not the senseless kind. The author brings us into Lee Hardens head and shows the inner workings of how this professional soldier becomes a beast of a war machine. Because the inner personality of Lee is described you can identify strongly with the character and it doesn't become a superficial action story. You cheer when he becomes angry, thoughtful when he ponders, its almost as if you feel the pain when he gets hurt. Again, he is not perfect and suffers the consequences, reminded me of John McClane in Die Hard, all beaten and busted up.

The author and narration are just really good, everything works. This is not your trashy zombie tale, but quality work.

Great Story

What's not to like about Captain Harden a kick ass soldier in a world gone to crap. Like most zombie stories, the creatures fall back as simple background story and the real fight is between the humans. This of course is why I like the genera so much, all about survival. I look forward to continuing the series.
