Story
Pell was just the first living planet. Then came Cyteen, and later others, and a new and frighteningly different society grew in the farther reaches of space. The importance of Earth faded and the Company reaped ever smaller profits as the economic focus of space turned outward. But the powerful Earth Fleet was still a presence in the Beyond, and Pell Station was to become the last stronghold in a titanic struggle between the vast, dynamic forces of the rebel Union and those who defended Earth's last, desperate grasp for the stars.

Story
The first book in C.J.Cherryh's eponymous series, Foreigner begins an epic tale of the survivors of a lost spacecraft who crash-land on a planet inhabited by a hostile, sentient alien race. From its beginnings as a human-alien story of first contact, the Foreigner series has become a true science fiction odyssey, following a civilization from the age of steam through early space flight to confrontations with other alien species in distant sectors of space. It is the masterwork of a truly remarkable author.

Story
They named him Thorn. They told him he was of their people, although he was so different. He was ugly in their eyes, strange, sleek-skinned instead of furred, clawless, different. Yet he was of their power class: judge-warriors, the elite, the fighters, the defenders. Thorn knew that his difference was somehow very important - but not important enough to prevent murderous conspiracies against him, against his protector, against his caste, and perhaps against the peace of the world. But when Thorn finally learned what his true role in life was to be, that the future of two worlds might hinge on him, then he had to stand alone to justify his very existence

Story
Scattered about the galaxy were the time-space Gates of a vanished but not forgotten alien race. In their time, long before the rise of the native civilizations, they had terrorized a hundred worlds—not from villainy but from folly, from tampering with the strands that held a universe together.
Now the task was to uproot these Gates, destroy their potency for mischief, take horror out of the hands of the few who hungered for power by misuse of the Gates.

Story
It was that transitional time of the world when man first brought the clang of iron and the reek of smoke to the lands which before had echoed only with fairy voices. In that dawn of man and death of magic, there yet remained one last untouched place - the small forest of Ealdwood - which kept the magic intact and protected the old ways. And there was one who dwelt there, Arafel the Sidhe, who had more pride and love of the world as it used to be than any of her kind.

The constellation of Hydri, also called the Serpent, became an undesirable destination during the era of humanity's most prolific interstellar colonization. For Hydri was under strict quarantine because it harbored an intelligent and dangerous alien race, the insectoid majat. Yet human colonies predating the quarantine did exist in this sector of space, which they called Serpent's Reach. Cut off from others of their own kind, they had their own inbred culture and special relationships with the alien majat.

Story
There he was in his sailboat in the middle of the Atlantic, all alone and loving it. Well, there was a US Navy carrier group on his southern horizon, but he was a Navy guy himself, so he didn't mind. Then came the UFOs, hurtling in from the Outer Black to overfly the carriers at Mach 17. Their impossible aerobatics were bad enough—but then they started shooting at each other, and at the Navy, with nukes. Little ones at first, but winding up with a 500 megatonner at 90 miles that fried every piece of electronics within line-of-sight.

Publisher's summary
No one at Meetpoint Station had ever seen a creature like the Outsider. Naked-hided, blunt toothed and blunt-fingered, Tully was the sole surviving member of his company -- a communicative, spacefaring species hitherto unknown -- and he was a prisoner of his discoverer/captors the sadistic, treacherous kif, until his escape onto the hani ship The Pride of Chanur.
Little did he know when he threw himself upon the mercy of The Pride and her crew that he put the entire hani species in jeopardy and imperiled the peace of the Compact itself. For the information this fugitive held could be the ruin or glory of any of the species at Meetpoint Station.

Story
They're all gone. We remember them like yesterday: pieces of our stolen heritage. Things like NASA. Football. Parades and pies. Good things, comfortable things. We remember a time when we were alone in the universe, safe and oblivious. But it's all gone now. We called them the Telestines, and in the face of their ruthless invasion we were powerless. By 2040, all the world's governments and militaries had fallen, and the remnants of humanity exiled to the solar system. We looked down on our blue planet, so close to our birthplace, so close to our home.

For millennia, the Weave, an alliance of species, have fought to resist the telepathic Amplitur, who strive to unite all self-aware life-forms in their great "Purpose." The Weave is slowly losing ground, but for both sides, warfare focuses more on outthinking and outmaneuvering your foe than destruction. In fact, most regard violence as hideously barbaric, and even the thought of harming another sentient being is beyond imagining.

Like seeing old friends after years absent.
If you could sum up The Pride of Chanur in three words, what would they be?
Best Series EVER.
What other book might you compare The Pride of Chanur to and why?
Minor Spoliers! Cherryh's Foreigner series has a lot similarities to Chanur - Lone human surrounded by strange aliens he only somewhat understands, although in Chanur you never are from the PoV of Tully and are very much so in Bren in the Foreigner series. Also the Lone human and Alien female romance, although it's not much delved into or explored in Chanur between HIlfy and Tully.
What about Dina Pearlman’s performance did you like?
Well...she was good...various voices and accents for the characters. Overall she was very good except in ONE glaring aspect that annoyed me every time she did it. The character voices are always delivered in the same way. For example, there's one crew member,Chur, who is badly hurt and during her recovery she's often noted as speaking in a whisper or other pained voice...but Pearlman reads it like they were just standing there with nothing wrong. Other than that she did an excellent job, I especially liked her portrayal of Jik and Goldtooth.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The aborted romance between Tully and HIlfy (In later books in the series)
Any additional comments?
Hard not to rave about this series. I've read the hardbacks at least 5 times over the years and I am thrilled Audible is going through the backlog of older series like this and putting them up. Like I said in the review title, it's like seeing old friends after being long absent..the kind of story that makes your heart ache when it's all over because you want so badly for the story to continue.

A great tale of SciFi Diplomacy
This is a tale of SciFi diplomacy. While it has action at time the push and pull of various factions is front and center. If you like those kinds of interactions in your scifi then you'll love this. Having said that the pace can lag a bit at times, but stick with it and you'll find it worth it.

Wonderful 9+ hours with "The Pride of Chanur!"
What Loved this stand-alone, also first of a series! Had no problem sticking w each chapter with the imaginative C. J. Cherryh, author, and the story-telling voice of Dina Pearlman, narrator, & audiobook The Pride of Chanur.
I had to pay close attention to many cultural
differences, many different names of aliens and individuals, and keep up with the storylines.
It is a Favorite!
I first read this in 1982 and recommend the series. For well-known science fiction plots and alien species C. J. Cherry is in the top authors category.

Easily one of the best SciFi series I have read.
A minimally-functional trading partnership of space-faring aliens, some intelligent and some who only MIGHT be--a mix of oxygen and methane breathers--all of whom have their own agenda, values and regard for law--finally meet another alien race. Humanity. Intensely political, this series defines what is human by displaying what is not. Great science, innovative uses of technologies that do not now exist, chase/action scenes galore; this series is the story of a crew of feline-like creatures who face great odds while performing their jobs, while still keeping their decency and morals and failing to hand a single male human over to a despicable violent race of other aliens despite the threats of personal and racial destruction. This series is easily one of the best SciFi series that I have read in more than 50 years of reading. Be ready to experience what you never even imagined could exist in Science Fiction.

Where does The Pride of Chanur rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

A fine story of species interacting!
I like the primary characters in this story being female Big Cats. The Kif are loathsome creatures, but still members of the compact. And will we ever understand the methane breathing people? I love all stories by C J Cherry, the pictures she draws in my head are INTERESTING.

Good Story
The pidgin English made hard for me to follow all the dialogue and names of characters. It is a very original storyline and worth the listening.
