Publisher's summary

Tormented her entire life by inhuman voices, Jennsen seeks to end her intolerable agony. She at last discovers a way to silence the voices. For everyone else, the torment is about to begin.

Richard Rahl and his wife, Kahlan, have been reunited after their long separation, but with winter descending and the paralyzing dread of an army of annihilation occupying their homeland, they must venture deep into a strange and desolate land. Their quest turns to terror when they find themselves the helpless prey of a tireless hunter.

Exploited by those intent on domination, Jennsen finds herself drawn into the center of a violent struggle for conquest and revenge. Worse yet, she finds her will seized by dark forces more abhorrent than anything she ever envisioned. Only then does she come to realize that the voices were real.

Staggered by loss and increasingly isolated, Richard and Kahlan desperately struggle to survive. But if they are to live, they must stop the relentless, unearthly threat that comes out of the darkest night of the human soul. To do so, Richard will be called upon to face the demons stalking among the Pillars of Creation.

Epic fiction or insurance premium

This book needed more time with an editor and also suffers from the blandest of narration. The two combined for a less than fantastic epic fantasy experience. Recommend listening at 1.5x speed to lessen the suffering.

Poor narrator...

Jim Bond sounds like a robot while he reads his lines . Makes the story sound dull when in fact the story is full of suspense.

this book is very different than the others, Richard and Kaylan are not the main focus. but the end brings it all together.

Enjoyable

I love all of his books, I just wish he wouldn’t get sooo descriptive on the most innate object or surroundings! I have to fast forward at that point!

stop assuming this is everyones first book

I felt the same way a few books ago. this is book 7. stop explaining the mord sith. the sword of truth. the confessors power. the bond. prophecy. if you havn't read the first 6 books than its you're loss. but for the rest of us, its tedious repetition. at this point itd be nice to give those of us who have read every page since day one, give us the benefit of the doubt that we can remember the basics.... also why do you have to 40+ chapters before giving us a glimpse or reconnecting us with the main characters? its torture.... there should be a drinking game for every time someone "cried in racking sobs"... there are times where the same point is made ridiculously clear multiple times, and then still repeated yet again...

that being said

i still love these books. this one is not nearly as good as Faith of the Fallen, but still good. still have not finished it yet but its getting to the good stuff finally!

update- the ending felt rushed after such a long build up. this book didnt really offer much to the story as a whole, i feel like if i skipped it i wouldnt miss much going forward except for jennsens back story. and im sure that will all be explained again in the bext book....

Excellent

Very enjoyable1 I like it a lot and hope the rest are as good as the last two books and that they don’t absolutely and totally mess up the narrator. Some of the books may had been just as good as this book and the last but the presentation was sooooo bad it didn’t matter.
