Publisher's summary

An accident leads to the discovery of a mysterious machine that has rested hidden deep underground for countless millennia. The machine awakens to begin issuing a series of increasingly alarming, if minor, omens. The omens turn out to be astonishingly accurate, and ever more ominous. As Zedd tries to figure out how to destroy the sinister device, the machine issues a cataclysmic omen involving Richard and Kahlan, foretelling an impending event beyond anyone’s ability to stop. As catastrophe approaches, the machine then reveals that it is within its power to withdraw the omen... In exchange for an impossible demand.

it seems like the characters are getting dumber

man. this story could have been great. there were several moments though when the characters just seemed dumb. Zed is not a dumb old man, and when he apparently doesnt understand simple things it makes me so upset. nicci too. they were just really dumbed down in this story.

A Pleasant Surprise

I just finished listening to this book and I have to admit, it was not at ALL what I expected. I had no idea from the blurb on the site that this book is set in medieval times, not something I would normally read. However, the further I got into the the book, the more I became wrapped up in the story. The characters are interesting and well developed. The story is full of magic, conflict and drama. I was actually looking forward to my commute each day so I could get the next installment while I was driving.

OK book in the Sword of Truth series

What made the experience of listening to The Omen Machine the most enjoyable?

It is definitely not the best of the books in the series, but it is not bad. The people are portrayed the same way as in the other books of the series and Richard doesn't use much magic as usually. One of the things I like there is almost no explanations of the things a reader should already know from the previous books, which I find very annoying (we already know what the Mother Confessor power does, who are Mord Sith, etc).
I was thinking that ordinary people portrayed as way too stupid or gullible, but now after looking at the recent and historical elections I think it is just a little bit exaggerated.
The story is unfinished and we can read about the new enemy emerges, so I'm looking forward for the next book it the series

Which scene was your favorite?

Finale as usually

Slow Storyline and less tan gripping book

The story was too slow / much less "dont want to pout it down" than his last book in this series. I almost stopped several times but kept hoping based upon the storyline.

Great story, -2 stars for OVER EXPLAINING!

Some neat and interesting ideas, but fleshed out in a half-assed way. It feels like TG was just trying to pad the bill.

Still fun!

If you are still following this series to this point you likely have enjoyed most of the other books. This book has similar features of the others, Kahlan and Richard fighting for each other, Zed being his old crafty self, and the interesting myriad of characters we have come to appreciate are there for assistance. There are some new interesting forces wreaking havoc and the protagonist must skillfully navigate treacherous circumstances to come out unscathed and save the day. The same song and dance you'd expect. I enjoy the narrator as he's done a lot of these audio books.

the same person needs to narrate the whole series

The narrorator of this one doesnt get names right, and the voices dont match. just wrong to switch them up like that.

Lost his touch...

I struggled with this one. Dialogue is too repetitive, like Goodkind was struggling to fill the book. It spins its wheels and doesn't get anywhere fast... As I'm listening I'm wondering when the story is going to start for the first 1/2 of the book... and because I love these characters.
