Publisher's summary

It’s been two years since the vampiric virus was unleashed in The Strain and the entire world now lies on the brink of annihilation. There has been a mass extermination of humans orchestrated by the Master - an ancient vampire possessed of unparalleled powers. The future of humankind lies in the hands of a ragtag band of freedom fighters - Dr. Eph Goodweather, Dr. Nora Martinez, Vasiliy Fet, and Mr. Quinlan, the half-breed offspring of the Master who is bent on revenge. It’s their job to overturn this devastating new world order. But good and evil are malleable terms now, and the Master is most skilled at preying on the weaknesses of humans.

Now, at this critical hour, there is evidence of a traitor in their midst... And only one man holds the answer to the Master’s demise, but is he one who can be trusted with the fate of the world? And who among them will pay the ultimate sacrifice - so that others may be saved?

The weakest of the trilogy.

The first two were great, however this third book seems rushed, incomplete, and underdeveloped.
There is a complete tone shift from the first two. It went from scientific to religious, which is fine but it’s almost as if the third was written by a different set of authors with notes from the original.

I like this so far

What did you love best about The Night Eternal?

I just stated to listen and I love the narrator. His voice makes the story good so far. I'm glad they kept the same guy. I like that some of the past is covered because it has been a while since I listened to the last 2 books. I only just started listening. I'm glad there is a 3rd book.

Average ending to an exciting series

Loved the series but I felt like they didn't try to build the characters much more. Ending was rushed. Felt like they were just trying to get it over with

World creation at its finest

Would you listen to The Night Eternal again? Why?

Yes, as well as the first two books. I bought the books because of the TV series and even though the TV series made numerous changes they kept true to the characters and the world of the books so that I could enjoy both. All of the characters remained true to their character and the book world remained true to itself.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I would say Fet the rat catcher was my favorite character. In a sense, he is like Roddy Piper's character in They Live in that once he knows what his mission in life is, he throws himself fully into it.

What does Daniel Oreskes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Daniel was a good reader I think much better than Ron Perlman did for the first book. At the same time, the characterization the authors did helped both the readers.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

"Face the world with open eyes."

Any additional comments?

Finally a good scary nonredeemable vampire story. I'm so sick of romantic vampires.

Interesting twist in the plot at the end.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Night Eternal to be better than the print version?

No. But I like to read too. But this way I can follow a story and work at the same time.

What did you like best about this story?

Not the usual direction for a vampire novel, but a great story. I like how they folded religion into the story, but still made it very plausible. Hey, Guillermo, when is the movie coming out?

Which scene was your favorite?

When Barnes finally got his.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. I like to savor a story.

Good ending to a great series

I really enjoyed all three books. I have to admit that I liked the first book the best, but I think that's just because I dig the suspense of buildup so much so that endings rarely deliver. Anyway, this ending was great. Good resolution, but not a Hollywood, everything-is-all-unicorns-and-rainbows now ending. It's a believable ending that accepts the situation in which the story thrust the characters. Also, I didn't really get the backstory about the angels and I struggled with the logistics of destroying the body remnants. But other than that, it was good.

Let Down Finale

Book Three of the Strain Trilogy, "The Night Eternal", seemed like an eternity.

Honestly, this title was a difficult one to get through. But, I set the speed on 2 and plowed on.

I just kept wondering when it was going to end. I was so sick of this group of people by the ending, that I was glad it was over. Trying to make a hero out of Eph Goodweather was like turning toilet paper into fine linen.

Eph is an infernal jacka--, Gus a gasball, Fet a stand-in, Nora ... well Nora (not much here, move along), Zach a little jerk, the Master an anti-climatic dweeb. The best character? Quinlan!

"Mr. Quinlan Goes to Congress" would have been a much better book than "The Night Eternal"

This trilogy is like a deflating balloon that wasn't completely inflated to begin with. Much opportunity with the backstory was lost. Some tidbits of intrigue dwarfed by the incessant distraction of our cast of largely unlikable characters.

All in all, was the trilogy awful? Nah. But we are left a tad bit short of good.
