Publisher's Summary

In the internationally best-selling The Bone Season, Paige Mahoney escaped the brutal penal colony of Sheol I, but now her problems have only just begun: many of the fugitives are still missing and she is the most wanted person in London. As Scion turns its all-seeing eye on Paige, the mime-lords and mime-queens of the city's gangs are invited to a rare meeting of the Unnatural Assembly. Jaxon Hall and his Seven Seals prepare to take center stage, but there are bitter fault lines running through the clairvoyant community and dark secrets around every corner. Then the Rephaim begin crawling out from the shadows. But where is Warden? Paige must keep moving, from Seven Dials to Grub Street to the secret catacombs of Camden, until the fate of the underworld can be decided. Will Paige know who to trust? The hunt for the dreamwalker is on.

    "Series maturing nicely!"

I admit to have being undecided following the first book in the series, "The Bone Season." Though the alternate-historical world-building had its compelling aspects, I found the Rephaim a bit too gothic. That's still the case, but it doesn't matter, because like all good stories, this is now clearly a human drama, with the Rephaim merely part of the scenery. The alternate history is more vivid and plausible than ever, despite elements both counterfactual and supernatural; this London is eerily familiar.

A word needs to be said about the narrator, Alana Kerr. Hers is clearly the voice of protagonist Paige, Irish accent, weary compassion, and all. She does not have a huge expressive range, and sometimes distinguishing character voices can be tricky in dialogue. However, there is one moment in this narration that makes up for all the defects. Usually narrators simply "punt" when confronted with verse the reader is supposed to imagine as sung; they either just read the verse, or they improvise embarrassing half-melodies. Not so Ms. Kerr. I won't say any more about the scene here, except that it was deeply moving, demonstrating extraordinary musical and affective sensibility.

"I liked it as well as the The Bone Season"

I don't love this series. There is still way too much going on to fully follow all the threads and all the characters. I liked the narrator better this time around. Maybe I have just gotten used to her. I will probably listen to the next book when it comes out, but I really need the author to start giving a better indication of where the story is going.

    "WOW!!!"

It took me awhile to get caught up in the bone season but when I did it really sucked me in! In this the second installment The Mime Order I was pulled in from the start. Excellent story great characters vivid details! The narrator is fantastic! Loved getting to learn more about the syndicate and its separate cohorts! Can't wait to see just how much more Paige can grow and excel through the rest of the series. Book 3 won't come soon enough!!!

    "I don't want to wait!"

I really enjoyed this listen. Paige is young, and she feels young. But she doesn't bug me because her struggles to figure things out don't feel contrived. (I generally hate when the reader knows what is happening far before the character.). The books build on some established ground, but they feel fresh and new.

As with Bone Season, the story moves along fairly slowly. Little time passes, and not that much happens. This doesn't bother me at all, but it could be an issue for dinner listeners.

I enjoy the narration. her voice is engaging, and the different characters are clearly distinguished.

I can't believe I have to wait a year for the next installment.

    "Great plot twists!"

This is an excellently written story with some great imagery and plot twists that I wasn't expecting! I would have listened to it all at once if life didn't get in my way! Excellent narration that was easy to listen to as well. I cannot suggest this e-book enough!

I'm not too fond of sequels, but Samantha Shannon has a wonderful writing style that keeps the story immediate.

Alana Kerr's voice is like a breath of fresh air.

This lost some of the magic of the first book, but replaced it with new magic. As a sophomore effort, it succeed and has set the stage for an epic novel to follow.

    "Couldn't stop listening. Brilliant"
Where does The Mime Order rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The follow on to The Bone Season is even better. This is so brilliantly written and read that I couldn't stop listening. I stayed up until 3am to finish the story

What did you like best about this story?

The concept that good can triumph over evil.

Which character – as performed by Alana Kerr – was your favourite?

I loved them all. Paige and Warden are wonderful. But I can't choose which character I liked the best, they are all performed with excellence

    Any additional comments?

This story gets better and better. I am waiting with baited breath for the next one. Hurry up please Ms Shannon. And please use Ms Kerr to read again.

"Still not sure on this series"

I'm really unsure of this series. I liked the first one just enough to listen to the second one and I think I like the second one JUST enough to listen to the third (when it's out).

There's loads of great ideas, but they're rushed. There's so much going on, so many different factions - but it doesn't feel complex and sophisticated it feels like the author has an idea, speeds through it and moves on to the next one. The 'twists' are unforgivably obvious.

The world she has created is really impressive - I love the Unnaturals and their different ranks. But I do struggle to visualise the world itself. I don't think she's created strong personalities - adding variants of "my lovely" to the end of a sentence doesn't really give a character flare and personality.

The voice actor is very poor, if that's important to you then this isn't the book for you.

That said, there's definitely something to this book, and I really enjoyed the ending. So I would tentatively recommend.

"Falls foul of Book 2 Syndrome but still good"

We've waited and waited for book 2, and now that it's here...

The story kicks off immediately following from the end of book 1. We then go through half a book of nothing much, waiting for something to happen. When it does, though, it's magnificent!

Ms Shannon has a gift for creating an entirely new world. There really isn't anything close to it in concept and scope. A good deal of the book is given to populating it and her characters explode from the pages. This London is gritty and cruel and the people who live there have to be hardbitten to survive, let alone thrive. London itself is divided into fiefdoms, run and administered by gang lords and their underlings. Their names are wonderful: White Binder, Pale Dreamer, Abbess, Rag and Bone Man, Wicked Lady, Black Moth, Jenny Green Teeth, Haymarket Hector...

Paige is a reluctant hero, someone who picks up the mantle of authority because there's no one else who can. She somehow retains her humanity and compassion. It's this that makes her developing relationship with Warden so poignant. She's too compassionate for the world in which she lives. Warden's kind is not much different from the human denizens of London - callous, disinterested and pitiless. Warden himself has the same streak of nobility as Paige and being drawn to and falling in love with a non-human actually makes sense.

The narrator is terrible. The only change in accent is between a lovely Irish lilt and Queen's English. Everything and everyone is read in either of these two. This is not a professional narration at all. There is very little tonal variation. Even pauses and character changes are bad. Audible's Mike Charzuk should be pilloried.

""no brainer" if u enjoyed the first one!"

It was a good while ago I read the first book... and could've done with a recap of all the different types of special powers in this book. Another slow start, but in the end it did keep the story ticking along and enjoyable.

If you've read the first, and enjoyed... this is a "no brainer".
