"The ending was a cliche, but good overall."

One of the most frustrating things about novels that deal with intergalactic conflict is that the author usually does not understand the subject matter fully. Good authors know what they don't know and let the reader's imagination fill in the blanks. Bad authors will work with subject matters which they have little or no knowledge of and torture the knowledgable reader. A good example of this is "hyperdrive". For some reason, some authors feel it is necessary to go over the technical details of how a hyperdrive system works. Usually they end up failing because the technology has so many holes in it. A good author will just say that they used a hyperdrive system to get from Point A to Point B, and leave it up your imagination as to how the system worked (I recommend Michio Kaku's "Parallel Worlds" for a good explanation of how a hyperdrive system might work. He also has a theory on how one might travel to another universe.).

John G. Hemry (Jack Campbell) knows his stuff and it shows. He has such a broad knowledge base about his subject that it makes it believable and compelling. I really enjoyed his fleet engagements, the interpersonal relationships, the sociopolitical intrigue. All this experience comes from his career in the Navy and working at the Pentagon. He comes across as being quite intelligent and thoughtful.

I like his writing style too. It is very fast pace and efficient. By the first or second chapter, you're into the action. There is not a lot of time wasted setting up the storyline. Boom, boom, boom, you're in. Hold on!

    "I enjoyed this series"

The series is well written. It is, however, predictable. I enjoyed listening to it, It was very "boys own adventure" in space. An impossible hero and an equally impossible relationship that works out in the end in perhaps the soppiest ending I have ever heard/read in my life. It made me smile. So yes it's cheesey and it's really really obvious, like a brick in the face but it is fun. I mean it's nice every now and then to get on a roller coaster, you know that the danger is false, you know what happens to you but you enjoy it anyway once in a while. That's this series.

    "Dreadful"

Zipping through the universe at sub-light speeds, trudging through the story arch at a glacial pace. More of the same repetitiveness, constant word-stuffing references seemingly only to achieve the publisher's demand to reach 90,000 words and his relationship with Captain Tanya Desjani has ruined the dynamic between them. She is beginning to nag him (her superior) over his tendencies to continually get into a funk and he is beginning to show all the traits of a hen-pecked husband without even to joys of a sexual relationship.

    "Just stop"

Not worth the money or token. It feels like 25% of the book is devoted to explaining what happened in the last four books.

Yes, the story is interesting, but it is so obviously diluted with repetitive descriptions that I couldn't enjoy it at all.

I'm sorry I bought the book, even though I got it as part of a 2 books for 1 credit.

    "More Grand Space Opera"

If you like hard (okay, maybe just a little squishy) science fiction with a huge dose of drama and solid, if not overly deep, characters, Jack Campbell is an author to keep on your list. I've listened to the whole Lost Fleet and Beyond the Frontier series', and there wasn't a slow or disappointing book in the bunch.

It's all about politics and space combat, and a clash of cultures that could ultimately save humanity.

My only complaint (and it's really petty), is that by naming the books after random ships it's a little hard to keep track of what order they come in. I needed a cheat sheet that I kept on a memo in my Blackberry so I knew in what order to listen.

    I said it was petty.

Great narration by Christian Rummel. For space opera and science fiction fans these are a great listen.

    "Relentlessly the same"
    Any additional comments?

Actually i enjoyed each of the books in the Lost Fleet series, but they were clearly just a "paycheck" for Jack Campbell. The characters are interesting with just enough intrigue to keep you listening....but...every book is exactly the same. I understand readers of series like familairity but they are completely alike with one or two small plot chanfges or revaltions to allow Campbell to title a new story. That being said, Campbell does keep you wanting to listen, although you will want to keep a finger on the fast forward button during the endless battle scenes. The stories are not bogged down with science and uncomprehensible physics but if i had to hear one more time about communicating or seeing across light hours of space i would have screamed. this is never more annoying than during his drawn out space battles.I really enjoy Christian Rummel's naration. he has a good range of character voices & accents & does a good job overall.what i really resent is having to listen (at the beginning) to the author bloviate about why or how he has written the books; at leat in print you can see this & skip it.These are good "beach" books & i DID like them over all but i cannot understand anyone describing them as the best or most exciting series going...make me think some of these reviews are set up.

"the best cat fight series ever"
Would you listen to The Lost Fleet: Relentless again? Why?

Yes. And I have just finished my third listen. Just listening to the two lead women characters verbally scratch each other's eyes out with Captain Geary planted squarely in the middle of it all keeps me coming back for more.

What did you like best about this story?

Nonstop back biting between the old dame and the captain of the Dauntless. Vintage v. the Feisty Rocket. When will Jack Campbell face the inevitable and give us a threesome? I want a threesome! I know Captain Geary would be up to the challenge.

What does Christian Rummel bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    Solid voice command. Good pace.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Join us as the brave Captain Geary leads his outnumbered but battle tested fleet through the snivelling Syndic worlds while he tries to steer clear of the greatest cat fight this side of the Andromeda Galaxy!

    Any additional comments?

Did I mention the cat fights?
