Publisher's summary

They say that the Thorn of Camorr can beat anyone in a fight. They say he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. They say he's part man, part myth, and mostly street-corner rumor. And they are wrong on every count. Only averagely tall, slender, and god-awful with a sword, Locke Lamora is the fabled Thorn, and the greatest weapons at his disposal are his wit and cunning.

He steals from the rich - they're the only ones worth stealing from - but the poor can go steal for themselves. What Locke cons, wheedles and tricks into his possession is strictly for him and his band of fellow con-artists and thieves: the Gentleman Bastards. Together their domain is the city of Camorr. Built of Elderglass by a race no-one remembers, it's a city of shifting revels, filthy canals, baroque palaces, and crowded cemeteries. Home to Dons, merchants, soldiers, beggars, cripples, and feral children. And to Capa Barsavi, the criminal mastermind who runs the city.

wordiest book ever

So most of the words were useless. No motivations of any character made sense. The money and magic systems were arbitrary. Way to many flashbacks without a purpose.

Not great

I had high expectations starting this audiobook but within a couple of hours those crumbled to pieces. Firstly the performance of the narrator, in my opinion, is very poor. The exaggerated tone of the characters and the way they are acted out seems very forceful, resulting in caricatures of personalities rather than realistic ones. I gave him 2 stars for the effort. As far as the storyline is concerned, I found that the characters were shallow as I did not feel emotionally invested to any of them. Furthermore, in the ending of the book, it seems to me that the actions of the protagonist are detached from his personality. All in all I would say that this book is quite bland.

Slow Start

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

First half of the book is extremely slow going, and, in my oppinion, not all that great.
However, the last part of the book redeems it, and makes it worth reading.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

This is a story with TONS of background story for the main character, and his friends, but it doesn't do that much for the book itself i'm afraid. In fact, I dare say you can skip the first half of the book, and still read the last part, enjoy it, and not miss out on ANYTHING really.

What does Michael Page bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Michael Page does a great work reading the story, giving the characters clear distinguishable voices, which helps immersion greatly.

Was The Lies of Locke Lamora worth the listening time?

Yes. Even though the first part, as stated above, was rather dull, the last part is brilliant, and well thought through. It's a good read if you get through the first part.

Lots of modern day swearing

Fantasy books shouldn't use English swear words. Make up your own. And there's way too much in this novel. Plus the story goes downhill quickly after the first book and never gets better.
