From the critically acclaimed author of Prince of Fools comes the second volume of the brilliant new epic fantasy series, The Red Queen's War.
"If you like dark, you will love Mark Lawrence. And when the light breaks through, and it all makes sense, the contrast is gorgeous." (Robin Hobb)
The Red Queen has set her players on the board…. Winter is keeping Prince Jalan Kendeth far from the longed-for luxuries of his southern palace. And although the North may be home to his companion, the warrior Snorri ver Snagason, he is just as eager to leave. For the Viking is ready to challenge all of hell to bring his wife and children back into the living world. He has Loki's key - now all he needs is to find the door.
As all wait for the ice to unlock its jaws, the Dead King plots to claim what was so nearly his - the key into the world - so that the dead can rise and rule.

"There are special rewards in store here for readers of the Broken Empire series. Highly recommended." (Robin Hobb)
"Marks an unbroken and steady ascent to the top of my favourite-fantasy pile. Lawrence gets better with each book he writes." (Myke Cole)
"Reminds me of when I first discovered Gemmell and Hobb and I can't wait for the next installment." (David Chadwick)
"The brisk adventure and black magic will leave readers eager for the next chapter in the series." (Publisher's Weekly)
Jarl: his flaws are refreshing, compared to other fantasy books where the protagonist is an amazing hero who does what's right every time.
If you enjoyed the first book, you'll love this.
"this author can do no wrong"
great performance. engaging characters. a story with plenty of meat on it. I'm off to get the next one right away.
This fantastic story just keeps getting better with a great character arc for Main protagonist.
I've read others by this author .. I'm at once attracted and repulsed by the content, the humour flawed characters are addictive- I found myself disgusted by the Jalan but wished him to be a better man, he rarely is and then he surprised you!! I would recommend this author but do t be expecting g the typical fantasy read it's funny sad, and appalling all at the same time.. Fantastic!!! I've listened to the audio book in this case really well done.
The second instalment of the Red Queens War continues to excite. I love the occasional link to the Prince of Thorns however it is just a slight touch which is a good thing. Jal is very predictable and sometimes very annoying however this is his character. Great read and cannot wait for the next book. I think I will read the next book myself.
"This series gets better and better!"
Cannot wait for the next. I miss Jalan and Snorri already. hilarious, tense, twisty and mysterious.
"This book was great!"
This book maintains the quality of writing and narration that made the first book awesome :) Prince Jalan has to be one of my favorite fictional characters as the situations he ends up in never fail to entertain! If you were a fan of Prince of Fools then you need to get your hands on this!!
"another fantastic series."
I love Mark Lawrence, very poetic writing style. a true wordsmith. very well narrated also, voice well fitted to Jarl and all accents consistent. The flashmanesque main character is endearing and enfuriating in just the right measure to relate to. Almost as good as the broken empire series and head and shoulders above about every other fantasy I have read. any lover of dark/gritty fantasy needs Mark Lawrence in their life, everyone else will succumb to the genre if they give this a go. For me an equal to game of thrones and the first law series. Can't wait for the finale... no really can you push that publishing date forward please. tomorrow would be great!
"Fantastic series so far"
Yes; well told with an appropriate narrator (honestly, the narrator's voice and accent can completely make or break a listening experience depending on whether or not it fits the story/characters!), and an excellent story, carrying on from the first book. I'll probably listen again before the 3rd one comes out!
When Jarl discovers that his power is unstable yet terrifyingly powerful.
The same as above.
Only one man can save his kingdom; whether he wants to or not...
Excellent follow on from the first, and I love how it subtly weaves in and around the Prince of Thorns trilogy. Jarl is a wonderful antihero; a little less shocking than Jorg and a little more likeable. And a whole lot less capable!
"Another excellent book by Mark Lawrence"
He never fails to deliver, loved it from start to finish and didn't want it to end
"Mark Lawrence keeps improving"
Story – 5/5
In my opinion, Mark Lawrence just keeps getting better and better as he writes more novels. I am enjoying the Red Queen trilogy more than the Broken Empire. I love the crossovers with the Yorg storyline, allowing a good join-up and better picture of the overall world.
The characters develop very nicely and are engrossing. The fantasy elements become even more prominent as well. There is a good mix of humour, action and sentimentality, and Lawrence is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors.
I definitely recommend to all fantasy fans, but I would say to start from Prince of Thorns and work your way through all of them to get the full enjoyment. If you don’t want to invest quite that much time or credits, starting with Prince of fools will still be good as the Broken Empire trilogy is not a Pre-requisite.
Sean Ohlendorf was excellent again, a perfect suit to the story in my opinion. His performance and voice acting are amongst the best, and will certainly encourage me to purchase audiobooks if his name is on them
