Publisher's Summary

The Legend of Drizzt: The Collected Stories expands upon the epic legend of the dark elf with 12 tales performed by the all-star cast of Felicia Day, Dan Harmon, Greg Grunberg, Tom Felton, Danny Pudi, Sean Astin, Melissa Rauch, Ice-T, Wil Wheaton, Al Yankovic, Michael Chiklis, and David Duchovny!

For years, the Legend of Drizzt has included short stories published in Forgotten Realms anthologies and Dragon magazine. Available here for the first time in audio are all the classic stories by the New York Times best-selling author R. A. Salvatore!

From the startling origin of Drizzt’s panther companion, to the tale of Jarlaxle and Entreri’s first encounter with the dragon sisters, the tales in The Collected Stories enrich this vividly-imagined series by building the world around Drizzt through exploring the backstories of side characters and magical locations.

What the Critics Say

"The narrators, all good actors, dramatize the unusual characters with clarity and deliver natural-sounding dialogue. Their even pacing helps listeners track tricky plot twists as the stories build.... Fans of Salvatore's work will be enthralled." (AudioFile)

    "Excellent bridge book!"

The book filled in a few gaps for me that before were only events that had been mentioned but without much elaboration. The author drops little golden nuggets throughout the drizdt series and it was nice for some of those events to be written and compiled.

    "Very entertaining"

It was extremely well written and performed by the various actors amazingly. However, very little directly told of Drizzt or really had anything to do directly with him.

A good entry to the fiction of D&D.

"Will Wheaton, please read all my books to me."

Will Wheaton was awesome, I wish he had read every story in the audiobook. Bravo.

I won't name names but, if this particular reader was perhaps an Iced Tea that i bought from the convenience store of audio beverages i would return it for tasting monotone and generally lack luster.

"Most of the narrators are HORRIBLE readers"
    Any additional comments?

All though a great book, the voice acting of most (not all) of the narrators are ridiculously obnoxious and off key. They really need to audition them with a sample reading before hiring these nut jobs. In one story, Artemis at 12 yrs old sounds like a grown man with a hoarse voice sounding similar Christian Bale’s Batman. Catte-brie sounds like a tiny pixie with a forced Irish accent....save your money and just buy the paperback.

    "A good fantasy read"
Would you be willing to try another one of An All-Star Cast’s performances?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

I found myself very distracted by Ice-T's pronunciation of sword.
Also, though I like her in Big Bang Theory, I didn't care for the Melissa Rauch performance.

    "A Great Listen , mostly"

The stories are great. I enjoyed them from start to finish. Most of the narrators are also great. A couple don't really perform as well as the others. I'm not sure if it's because the stories settings don't match with the style of their performance, or if they didn't try as hard as the others.

Notably Ice T's performance doesn't seem to match the story he reads.

    "Enjoyable listen"

Ice-T's narration was a bit rough, but otherwise an enjoyable listen.

I haven't read any Salvatore in quite a while. Listening to these tales was like reuniting with old friends. If you enjoy any of his other work, you'll enjoy these stories.

"Wish a couple of the narrators were better"
Would you listen to The Legend of Drizzt: The Collected Stories again? Why?

The stories, typical of R.A. Salvatore, were excellent. He has long been one of my favorite writers of fantasy. However, a couple of the narrators were less than stellar, and were a disappointment. Ice-T, and his pretentious insistence on pronouncing the 'w' in 'sword' was the low point for me. In a couple of the action sequences, when he got more excited, he actually pronounced the word correctly, revealing the mispronunciation was an affectation. The highlights of the narration, for me, were Felicia Hardy, Tom Felton, Will Wheaton, and Sean Astin. David Duchovny was the other letdown.

I will listen to the audio book again, but will likely avoid the chapter read by Ice-T. This is a shame, as that chapter has arguably the best Drizzt battle sequences.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Legend of Drizzt: The Collected Stories?

I really enjoyed finding out more of the backstory on Guenhwyvar. Tom Felton did an excellent job narrating.

    "It was alright."

A bunch of stories in between greater books, this collection is voiced by celebrities with various degrees of competence.
I particularly enjoyed the segments that featured flashbacks.

    "Not Bad... Overall"
What did you like best about this story?

It isn't just one story... it is a short story anthology. I liked hearing about different characters who have appeared in the novels of the Legend of Drizzt. Wil Wheaton was an especially engaging narrator.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The lack of enthusiasm from certain narrators: Ice-T and David Duchovny (sp.?), I'm sorry to say lacked feeling and affected my ability to connect with their respective stories.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

A couple of the narrators made me groan in frustration at their lack of feeling. See the previous question

    "Great for new listeners!"

I really enjoyed this collection, having never read any of the Legend of Drizzt novels.

Many of the stories felt like excellent introductions to characters I know to be beloved, and have enough lore to draw me in, without requiring a detailed knowledge of the series.

I'm now going to book one of the legend to start working my way through.

The readers were all excellent in different ways; my only criticism would be that, for me as an Englishman, some of the American pronunciations sounded a little forced, and brought me back out if the story as they jarred. That said, having a host of very familiar voices reading a great collection of stories was fantastic!
