Publisher's summary

Then she opened her mouth to scream - and recognised me. It was what I’d been waiting for. She froze. She looked into my eyes. She said, “It’s you.”

Meet Jake. A bit on the elderly side (he turns 201 in March), but you’d never suspect it. Nonstop sex and exercise will do that for you - and a diet with lots of animal protein. Jake is a werewolf, and after the unfortunate and violent death of his one contemporary, he is now the last of his species. Although he is physically healthy, Jake is deeply distraught and lonely.

Jake’s depression has carried him to the point where he is actually contemplating suicide - even if it means terminating a legend thousands of years old. It would seem to be easy enough for him to end everything. But for very different reasons there are two dangerous groups pursuing him who will stop at nothing to keep him alive.

Here is a powerful, definitive new version of the werewolf legend - mesmerising and incredibly sexy. In Jake, Glen Duncan has given us a werewolf for the 21st century - a man whose deeds can only be described as monstrous but who is in some magical way deeply human.

One of the most original, audacious, and terrifying novels in years.

Critic reviews

“A brilliantly original thriller, a love story, a witty treatise on male (and female) urges, even an existential musing on what it is to be human. Get one for yourself and one for the Twilight fan in your life.” (James Medd, The Word , UK)
“Space should be cleared for this violent, sexy thriller... The answer to Twilight that adults have been waiting for.” (Courtney Jones, Booklist)
“Yes, there are vampires here... But don’t give this book to Twilight groupies; the frank tone, dark wit, and elegant, sophisticated language will likely do them in... smart, original, and completely absorbing. Highly recommended.” (Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal)

Tired of listening to stories about humans? Consider the werewolf! Taking various forms over the course of centuries and mythologies, often as flesh-devourers, werewolves now commonly appear in fantasy and romance novels as shape-shifters. The shape-shifting element in werewolves' stories has almost humanized them, depicting the internal struggles we all face within ourselves, on some level or another.

fuck! kill! eat!

I absolutely recommend LAST WEREWOLF. Without a doubt it's worth owning. If I could write well, i'd wish for Duncan's command of prose.

This book is soooooo slow....

Please, I'm hoping this audio book picks up. Rght now the character is remembering, reflecting and basically boring me to the point of tears. I'm hoping to get through it and perhaps I'll hear some action, some moving forward instead of "rear-view" mirror explaining. The narrator is excellent and for right now, this is the only compliment I can think of for this presentation.

A Complex, Original Werewolf

Jake is—at once—a complex and original werewolf. The last of his kind and a survivor in a world growing increasingly deadly and small. It's harder and harder to disappear and remain unseen, but with a network of resources amassed over multiple lifetimes, it's not impossible.

This story is refreshingly original and mesmerising! The characters are easy to fall in love and sympathise with; you easily become friends with these people and share in their joys and fears throughout the story. It's wonderful to see werewolves as the GOOD GUYS for once rather than the menacing evil, which is something that I absolutely adored about this trilogy.

Settle in for an adventure with Jake, Talulla, and the gang. You won't be disappointed.

The Ennui of a Naughty Dog

No pretty pony sparkles or virtuous animated corpses here! Rather, a 200 yr. old, sophisticated and philosophical lycanthrope, his glass of scotch, his cigarette, his journal, and the lunar cycle. Our man-wolf Jake matter of factly dismisses the ugly business of a werewolf's dietary needs, and insouciantly describes his sexual habits like National Geopgraphic doing Debbie Does Dallas. What you get is an adult, smart, hilarious, thriller that treats the old-guard monsters with the respect and fear they deserve! Raunchy? Absolutely! Goodness, I blushed... Then I watched my very distinguished Old English bulldog and realized that his narration of his persuit of a noble dog's life would probably read much like impulse-driven Jake's journal. I would accuse Sir Louie of being rudimentary--but never being crude or vulgar. Ethologically speaking, Jake is nonchalant--but he is no licentious lycanthrope! Great to read a very well written, clever "monster" book for adults, and the narration is an absolute treat.

A must read

The Last Werewolf is a thrilling voyeur journey through the last days of a horrific monster. To tell this tale, Glen Duncan utilizes insight, dry British humor, and sex. In the process, the last werewolf becomes personalized into our last werewolf and we feel for the beast man. All in all, this is a brilliant and unique book brought to life by Robin Sachs.

Great Book. Hello Werewolves, Goodbye Zombies

Extraordinary story. The author builds on traditional werewolf legends to build an urbane and amusing tale. The story is complex, modern and amusing without breaking once from classic werewolf conventions. The performer is perfect for the tale. As the vampire craze was replaced — or complemented — by zombies, so werewolves may be the next wave.

I'll look forward Glen Duncan's next book.

great reviews, so I thought I would try it, totally not my style, to rude and crude for me.the narration was good, I though Robin Sachs did a great job.

Impeccably narrated

Sachs did a stellar job narrating the story. He brought life, lust, and savagery to the angsty werewolf's erudite prose.

The plot itself was nothing new or spectacular, but I would listen to this for the language and the performance alone.

Masculine Man In Drag

Any additional comments?

That image in your head kind of sums up this book. Rough edges, ruthless but with enough quirk and moxie to make the story incredible. The main character is hard and rough because of the lifestyle he lives, and being the last of his kind makes him not pitiful but engaging with all the stuff he knows. The people he meets and how the world is run is turned upside down making you want more and wonder will happen next. The ending makes me hope somehow there is a sequel. If you are western fan, love scotch, or just like a good old duke it out fight, this book is golden.
