What the Critics Say

"The plot is a classic quest structure - an impossible goal, a motley company, heroes, villains, monsters, magic, desperate chances, bittersweet success....What makes The Last Unicorn unique is the way Mr. Beagle transcends the ordinary fantasy quest trope with his incomparable storytelling skill." (The Green Man Review)

"The Last Unicorn is one of the true classics of fantasy, ranking with Tolkien's The Hobbit, Le Guin's Earthsea Trilogy, and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Beagle writes a shimmering prose-poetry, the voice of fairy tales and childhood." (Amazon.com review)

    "Delightful classic"

This is a magnificent recording of a timeless classic of fantasy fiction. Peter narrates his best-known work in masterful fashion - the characters spring to life, and the gentle musical interludes between chapters are delightful in themselves. Alas, like the book, it is all too short, but well worth the listening,

    "Need different narrator"

I have always loved this story and was looking forward to the audio version, until I realized Perter S. Beagle was a great writer and an awful narrator. I couldn't get through the first thirty minutes. Which is too bad, it is a great story.

What made the experience of listening to The Last Unicorn the most enjoyable?

I enjoy the narrator. One person complained; but, personally, I love his narrating style. If you are unsure, check out the preview.

"Great book, great movie, great audiobook"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Some yes and some no. It's definitely a book that only certain people will like. But the semi-awkward, upfront, candidness of the characters has a very fresh feel.

Which character – as performed by Peter S. Beagle – was your favorite?

Schmendrick, by far. A despondent, hopeful, anachronistic man just trying to make his way. He knows too much, but can't put his knowledge to practical use. Peter S. Beagle really brings this character to life in a good way. You don't pity him, you don't sympathize with him, but you really understand him.

    Any additional comments?

This book is a tricky one. If you liked the movie, you'll definitely like the book. It's one of the few stories that works well in both formats, like the Princess Bride. If you liked the book, the audiobook is a great buy. But if you've never seen the movie or read the book, I would do some research before buying this to make sure it's a story that's worth spending money on.

    "Hated the Narrator"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No not in audio form. I read this book when I was younger and I fondly remember the story. It is a good story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    The unicorn of course

What didn’t you like about Peter S. Beagle’s performance?

He sounds like he has a lisp. It was very irritating it listen too. He should have gotten someone else to read it.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Yes

    "A Classic Must Buy"

If you've only ever watched the animated movie as I had, then I sincerely suggest you purchase this book as well. Though the movie follows the story fairly accurately, the movie is no substitute for the book. You learn more of the characters and understand their psychology all the better by listening to this marvelous tale. The fact that it's narrated by the author himself is an added bonus. You can really hear how he intended the characters to sound, and that can make all the difference.

"My favorite movie on the page"

I finally got around to reading this (20+ years later). I loved this movie as a child. It was one of those tapes that I wore out move than once. It was delightful to finally read the book. I was impressed with how closely the movie followed the book, and I greatly enjoyed the additional richness in the text. The narration by the author works very well, and I listened from start to finish without pause. Excellent fantasy read in general especially for anyone who grew up in the 80's.

I was a 'readaholic' for most of my life. I started crochet and other hobbies. That took away from my reading time. I discovered audio books at the library. That set me off. now, that I am older my eyes make it too difficult to read. So I now am a very diligent audio book listener!

    "Unicorns rediscovered!"
If you could sum up The Last Unicorn in three words, what would they be?

    A great story!

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the music lead at each chapter. The music reflected how I felt when I read this story so long ago. It also brought back to my mind scenes from the movie. The story is as appropriate today as it was when first published.

What does Peter S. Beagle bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Peter S. Beagle's voice sounded a lot like I mentally visualized the wizard's voice to sound like. I enjoyed his reading very much! I was a little reluctant at first due to having been put off by other authors reading their work.

    Any additional comments?

    Listen and enjoy!

"I have always loved this story."

I have watched the animated movie for years, so many times I can recite the dialogue. The book and movie are very close, almost word for word, so as I listened I could see the movie scenes in my head. Great book, great story.

"Interesting and a little unusual - I like it"

This is definitely an odd book, and hard to describe!
I've loved listening to it, and did from the start, but took a little while to get into the swing of his storytelling. It certainly has a rhyme and reason of its own... there are indeed all the 'classic' fantasy quest elements here but it goes a little crosswise to both classic styles and the more modern fantasy that i'm used to - although both elements are definitely in there. Makes a pleasant and suprising change.

I don't normally go for fantasy (or otherwise) read in an american accent, since i often find it somewhat grating but I have really enjoyed this narrator. Of course its always great to get your hands on an audiobook narrated by the author.
