Publisher's summary

The complete unabridged audiobook of J.R.R Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of 13 dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey ‘there and back again’. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon....

The prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies since its publication in 1937, establishing itself as one of the most beloved and influential books of the 20th century.

Amazing!

I was not going to review this, but I've started to listen to the trilogy, naration by a bunch of actors, but it was so bad, that I had to come here to praise Rob for his amazing performance! Sadly I can't purchase the trilogy read by him.

Genius reader

Loved Rob Inglis rendition of this wonderful story The conversation between Smaug the Dragon and Bilbo a highlight and the pompous Thorin Oakenshield perfectly captured.

Great story and performance

Love the story (always have) and the performance is great, I am guessing it was created after the LOTR movies as there is a very strong Andy Serkis / Ian McKellen influence. Would have had five stars but the quality is a little metallic - not as clear as it could be.

the best children's books I ever experienced

The book itself is perfect. The naration is the jewel on the crown. Some ambient back sounds could have made it surreal but this audio book is a work of art already.

An amazing performance by the narrator!

Where does The Hobbit, Part 1 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'm not a JRR Tolkien fan, and unfortunately the Hobbit is not my favourite book. Having said that, the narrator's performance was exceptional, making this 11 hour saga worthwhile.

Great story, stellar narrator!

There is no one like Rob Inglis to bring Tolkiens beautiful stories alive - he is great at voices, accents and singing - an unbelievably great feat of narration and voice acting

Enchanting children's tale, beautifully read

Superb! One of the classic children's fantasy tales, set in a rich and enchanting world of dwarves, goblins, wizards, elves, and dragons, along with the most unlikely of heroes, Bilbo Baggins the hobbit.

The recording is beautifully done. Rob Inglis's voice is pleasant and relaxed, and he reads at a leisurely and comfortable pace. The character voices are generally appropriate and varied, although some of the dwarves were not what I expected. Most surprising of all, Inglis actually SINGS the songs, giving an extra touch of character and authenticity.

A word of caution: While the story is set in the same world as the Lord of the Rings and relates events a generation earlier, this is not merely a prequel in the same style. This is a fun children's tale, written for a younger readership.

To be read before you have lost your childlikeness, and reread many times to keep regaining it.
